1983 porsche 944 STUMPED!
First and foremost thank you for allowing me to join this amazing forum full of expertise and helpfull posts, ive been a reader for about 3 months now but as of today i became a member because i dont know anyone that can help me with my 944! ive always owned lowriders so this has been the biggest change for me.
okay. it ran great everyday. then one day i pulled over to use the phone (shut car off) after talking, it wouldnt start. opened the hood and the possitive battery lead was smoking. after further investigation and a long walk home to get my tools i re connected the positive lead with a cleaner, uncoroded section of the positive lead. bang! she fired up and ran great. then one night, later after driving all day. it wouldnt start. just kept turning over! juice didnt seem to be the problem because it was a steady turn over (no dieing battery sound ) realized vacum hoses were extremly old and brittle when i checked on and it broke at the T by the fuel pressure regulators. i replaced those, checked the spark plug lead for spark, and nothing happened. i put a skrewdriver in the end and put it close to a ground. also couldnt hear the fuel pump very well. as its just me fixing it so i have to try and start it aswell. ive removed air cleaner and checked the acv? i think its called? (the plate that can get gunked up over time ) any suggestions? please help shes my daily driver and i dont want to part with it! thanks again sorry if i sound completly unknowing lol sincerely chris |

Smoke at the hot lead, any loose wire around the battery area, the alarm horn is there and some people will cut the wires and they will short. Also the dme is at the foot of the passenger side. Some people will cut the alarm wire (bad) and leave them to eventually short. i had this happen on my old 85.5 944, burnt from the fuse box to the alarm box near the DME.

well thanks alot man, youve helped with the tedius task of locating the DME without a guide book.and no loose wires at the battery cable. 3 seperate side connecters plus positive lead but i will trace it. Are DME relays easy to obtain ? im in BC so will local parts shops be able to get ahold of these parts? so far ive just found parts threw parted out cars

I usually pick up extra DME realys at pick in pull. Not sure if you have of those there. Look in the Parts for sale section here. Parted cars are a good source. I all ways check for any thing that does not look stock, wires cut and not going to anything. You can all ways use a voltmeter to see if there's power in the cut line.

your DME is NOT in the passenger footwell, it is above your shins when sitting in the driver's seat, bolted to the bottom of the steering column.
your fuse box is under there as well... enjoy learning to become a contortionist!

Ahh thats right Pre 85. Removing the steering wheels helps some. Removing the seat helps alot.

also just cracked the fuel line at front and it didnt spray like pressure releasing it gushed out, i closed it, re cranked the car and it gushed out the same as before, if the fuel pump wasnt working would the line be empty ? or and would the fuel resevoir at a lower spot or would it stay in the line upto the top of engine

That vaguely looks like the connector for the 02 sensor....
No spark but your getting fuel? When you crank the car does the Tachometer move at all? It should jump about 200rpm's... if this doesn't happen then check the connectors for the speed and refference sensors... The connectors are VERY close to the broken connector you posted a picture of. 2 identical looking connections, black and rectangular.... Make sure they are still connected.
