Lightbulb Timing Belt parts list... anything I am missing?

So, I just bought my 87 844 Turbo and am going to be doing some maintenance to it and want to know what you guys think about my parts list I am making. There may be an easier way to piece this all together, if so, let me know. Or see anything I am missing? Also, what are the best write ups to use while doing the install? Thanks in advance!

Front Engine Seal Kit
Which one do I need? #1 or #2? OR if I got them from Pelican Parts, I couldn't tell which set to get?

Kevlar Timing Belt Kit - Rennbay $335

Water Pump - Vertex $289

Water Pump Gasket - Vertex $3.45

Thermostat - Vertex $13.95

Kricket Belt Tool - Rennbay $22

Timing Belt Wrench - Rennbay $19.50

--- Would I be better off buying this tool kit instead? Do I need more than the above 2? 944online.com $150

Ignition Tune-Up Kit - Rennbay $172

Mahle Oil Filter - Rennbay $7.75

Oil - Castrol 20w50, how many quarts?

#2 has the oil pump drive gear. if u wanna go all out and replace everything....yea sure get #2.

u'll absolutely need the arnnworx kit for the flywheel lock. the special 2pin wrench is nice to use as is the flat bent wrench.

just get the 5qt jug. u'll use it all eventually

thanks!

what is most common to do for the timing belt change, #1 or #2 for the engine seal kits... there is a fairly big price difference.

how many qts go in the engine? I heard to get 7 and put 6.5, so a 5qt jug wouldnt quite do it...

if u wanna just get it all done and over with, get it all in #2. most of the time, u won't need the balance shaft sleeves though. it all depends on how worn they are currently.

or if u don't mind having the downtime, take it apart first and order what u need.

hmm i guess 6 and half is what its supposed to be. i've always just put in 5 and topped off as necessary. never bothered measuring

Hello dmw319,

Congratulations on the new car.

You spent a lot of time gathering the information on parts. This is commendable as many new owners are unable to understand the total concept of the project.

I will go down your list:

Do not buy #1 or #2. Pelican has the same parts for less money.

Seal kit with shaft races $106.50:
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 10-0507-099-M260

Oil pump drive sleeve $44.25:
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 944-107-161-02-M260

Additional "O" ring for oil pump sleeve $1.75:
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 999-707-283-40-M213

Additional cam housing sponge seal $1.50
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 928-105-184-00-M260

Total cost $154.00

Kevlar timing belt kit Rennbay. Sure, go for it. Kevlar belt is overkill.

Waterpump--Vertex NO
Why? Quality bad.
********** rebuilt waterpump - Rennlist Discussion Forums

You should buy a new pump from Pelican for $303 to go along with the Kevlar timing belt if quality is an issue and money not a problem.
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 951-106-021-10-M59

Otherwise you should get a rebuilt from Zims allzims.com for about $98 exchange with a 2 year warranty. The best rebuilt on the market done by a quality rebuilder.

Get a new waterpump bolt kit as well.

Thermostat-Pelican Get a new radiator cap as well-Pelican. Get a new radiator fan relay/switch as well-Pelican

Krikut belt tool DO NOT BUY! The tool is useless.
Get the Arnnworx tools Home or have a shop tension the belt if you are nervous after you try. You have the Porsche "mechanical spring belt tensioner" Search. Nylor just did it with no additonal tools.

Timing belt tools. Get the flywheel lock from Pelican for $44.50 or buy it from Arnnworx when you get his tension tools.

Tune up kit. I'm tired, sure get it

Mahle oil filter---yeah! Pelican

Castrol oil. What did the PO previous owner use? Was it Castrol? If yes, yeah- I use it. Use what was in the car previously. Decide later to change.

What did I forget? A lot.

GL

EDIT:

Now I remember:

What are the best writeups?

Arnnworx has very good explanations and additional information you need.

Projects & DIY Links

Van from Rennlist has excellent videos:

Water pump videos on post 1
Front seal video on post 36
Belt video on post 38

haha

Buy:
timing belt (regular)

balance shaft belt

All rollers (there is a kit out there)

water pump with gasket

front engine reseal kit

you will need a spanner and flywheel lock. You can tension the belts by hand.

with the extra money saved you can pay someone to do it, or buy lots and lots of good beer!

Your '87 turbo should have the upgraded "turbo" pump with the the belt rail/nuts already.

Great, thanks John!

My main question.... If the engine seal kit, oil cooler seal, turbo thermostat, and rollers were ALL done in 2006 (only 10k ago) should I go ahead and skip these and just do the 2 belts and water pump/gasket/thermo?

The rollers will last at least 45K---Porsche suggests 60K but that is too much.
FYI the origninal rollers put on when new were defective and cracked --just history.

Your rollers should be OK.
Just get the belts.

When you pull the belts off, spin the rollers and feel for "grit" , noise, wobble----now you have to get a new roller. This is just a basic check, yours should be OK.

If the engine seal kit was done 10K ago, it should be OK. When you pull the rear belt guards you can check for leaks & oil paths if you do not see them now.

When the engine seal kit was done, the front crank seal and "O" ring should have been replaced as well. You can check if it is leaking by seeing if oil is leaking from the front crank down the oil pan. If you see a leak you have to replace the front crank seal and "O" ring.
FYI--a new front crank seal will be ruined if the oil pump sleeve has a groove from the front crank seal lips that touch the crank. If any oil has pooled on the inside lower belt covers the seal is bad as well and need to be replaced.

Why are you going with a low temp thermostat?

The car should get up to normal operating temps for performance and emissions .

Usually a low temp is 75C. A normal thermostat is 83C

Tune up kit seems high. Did you price out individually?

9am---back to work ....

John, updated some links in my post. look better?

Also, looks like all my researching the past 2 days paid off. I just spent $685.78 on all my Porsche parts! I got most of it from Zims after all instead of going everywhere. Only thing I didnt get there was the specialty tools

Do not buy a cheap set of triple square from AutoZone or the dime store.

Quality tools will not strip and fall apart with a little torque.

Get SnapOn or similiar metric hex and a set of 4 common triple square.

Let us know how the "new" Arnnworx belt tension tool works for you. As I mentioned, your car has the Porsche mechanical spring tensioner that gets the belt tension close. Set the tension per Porsche spring tension specs and then use the Arnnworx tool to compare.

Clarks-Garage has a belt tension quide as well.
Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belt Tensioning

I buy most of my maintenance parts on Pelican, the forum sponsor whenever possible.
