Fuchs Powdercoating
Just finished stripping and polishing (well, the lip anyways) one of my Fuchs wheels, and I have been toying with the idea of powdercoating, there's a pretty friendly machining/mediablasting/powdercoating shop nearby that would do it for pretty cheap. Perhaps they could even refinish the minor curb rash and whatnot while they're at it. It would definitely be black, which is better (subjective ofc) of these two variants:
![]() ![]() I think doing the whole wheel is less original, but looks better. ![]()

I like the chrome/metal trim look with black center spokes.

Another reason I'm leaning towards the whole wheel. Other question is, I just bought new lug nuts, do I just try and find a black set or just get the steel ones I have powder coated as well?

Yup, I was using the original aluminum set which is pretty gross and chewed up by this point in time. One of the locking aluminum lugs stripped after a couple times off and on, luckily I have an extra set of open ended steel ones. So I went to evil bay and found a polished set for $28, they're steel and should work better from what I have read/seen. The seller said they were "new" seems slightly used to me but it was a good price.

Okay. Talked to a shop in Antioch called Severed Metal. The guy first said $75, and I said that was high and he went to $70 each wheel. That would be for sandblasting, sanding and Powdercoating to a black semi-gloss. Not including removing the tire from the wheel. Turnover time 3-4 days. What do you guys think? I thought that was a bit steep, but okay.

I'd be very cautious about blast media on those things. They really should be chemically stripped.

Just a suggestion but you have been talking about Plasti coating in other posts, maybe you should try plasti-dip first to see if you like that before you pay to have powdercoating done especially if you are considering doing the whole wheel. Then if you don't like it, it won't hurt so much financially to change your mind.

Rasta: What do you mean, sir? I did use paint stripper to remove the old red paint. Media Blasting will damage the Fuchs?
P. Newbie: You make a good point, I do have three cans of black plastidip lying around, maybe I could clean the wheels off well and spray some coats on and see how it turns out.

The plastidip probably won't stick to the polished aluminum that well but you will at least get an idea what it looks like before you went all in with powdercoating.

I would never go with powder coat on any wheels.WHY because if you get a chip in the powder coat it will be next to impossible to fix it ,with paint a little sanding & voila you can hide that chip. All black fuchs don't make the wheels stand out, what your doing with an all black your hiding a very beautiful wheel which the Fuch is.Guess here it will be a question of taste. My idea of a Fuch is black center-polish lips-painted center caps -black or polish lug nuts, fit those to any 944s don't matter the car car color they will stand out.Just an exampletake a look of (all black Fuchs versus OEM Fuchs on this red 951) which one stand out the most?Again a question of taste.

As one who has been running Powder powder coated Fuchs & other Porsche rims for well over 20 years, and as one with a Fuchs fetish
![]() ![]() (NO, they aren't for sale and that is just the ones at the house, still more on my cars and in my storage areas) I can say, based on my actual experiences, that A] Fuchs can be media blasted with no bad effects, IF, the person doing the blasting knows what he is doing, remember, these are FORGED rims, so they are stronger than cast. B] Yes, if you are careless enough to chip OR curb a powder coated rim, it can be sanded and paint matched, just like a painted rim, plus it is much harder to chip Powder Coated finish, course, I have only been running powder coated rims on my TRACK cars, since the 90s.... C] Fuchs are anodized, and it is very hard to strip them, also requires lots of sanding if you are going to polish the. D] Make sure the powder coater MASK off the back faces of the rims, that meet the hubs. E]There is a "Filler" powder that can fill cleaned up rash(i.e. sand the pieces sticking up) and gouges, a good powder coater can make it vanish so you can't find it. Here is a set of my 7&9X16 Fuchs in Gloss Black. ![]() a 9X15 powder coated in Matt Black, these were used on a HSR 914-6 race car, this picture is after a few seasons of the car being raced ![]() ![]() I have used Powdertech Plus for ALL my coating needs, car, bike, home, shop, work, ect since the 80s. Upon Catamax's expert recommendation, I am going to plastidip two of them all black and the other side just the inner, and see how it looks! Just need a little free time
