ignition switch component question

I'm not looking for instructions for removing the ignition on a late 944 as there are plenty of resources that people have been kind enough to submit to the various boards. Mine is a slightly different academic-like question...

I haven't found a message post yet identifying the common failures within the overall ignition assembly and to determine which specific internal component has actually failed.

Here are the specifics:
  1. key turns fine with no binding
  2. it starts fine but has no internal spring loaded motion to return it counterclockwise so I have to manually turned the key away from the start position
  3. when the key is turned to the off position, sometimes it acts like it only traveled to the ACC position as opposed to the full OFF position.
Am I just thinking to much on this topic??? Do people normally just replace the entire subassembly? Part of my issue is likely the electrical component but what component provides the spring back from start position function?

Thanks!
