Porsche Crest 84 944 r12 to r134a conversion help!!!

So i need to convert my 1984 Porsche 944 to r134a, problem is that the low pressure port is located on the compressor and there is no room to put the r134a adapter port on due to the location. Any help?

you can get a 90 degree adapter fitting that fits.

Lots of info on Pelican. Type in r12 to r134a conversion in the search box.

Keith,
When you replace the adaptor, be sure to replace the high pressure switch as well as the drier prior to evacuating the system.

Gerriatric 1983 944

Perhaps I should start a new thread, let me know if this is off base, thanks.

For years I had a way to recharge my A/C with R134a. And it worked well!
See the attached picture of the hose I left attached to the problematic fitting
on the compressor of this good old 944.

Then, one year, I could no longer recharge.

Well my special hose had failed, and I looked for a NEW way to solve the low side fitting problem. I found this thread, and ordered the part! But dog gone it, it
just WILL NOT SCREW ONTO MY COMPRESSOR.

Anyone have suggestions?

Did you have to GRIND SOME OF THE right angle adapter off?

Is there some LOWER PROFILE right angle adapter to buy?

I am hoping for one more recharge to work on Gerry before I die.

I am considering asking an A/C shop to rebuild my hose, think that would be legal?

Thanks all for your time!

(and I know to remove the shrader valve before using the right angle)

get a shorter AC belt and when the belt tensioner is tight you will have plenty of clearance. i have one of these on my early 85 car:
belt fits 1992 toyota camry 4-cyl. Gates PN#K050390

I just use the R12 fittings with my gauge kit rather than use the R12/R134 adapters.

You still need an adapter that way, or a side can tap. I have gauges for both, but went shorter belt and 90 degree eons ago, so much easier.

yep...

just reinstalling the AC lines on my 86 951 and noted there are connectors for both the high and low side on top of the lines next to the shock tower. and my 84 928 also has connectors on the hard lines.

I do recall when working on an early 944 the compressor ports are different than the later ones but don't recall now if they had these ports. hard to see but at the very top of this pic.

^^ nope, early cars the low side port is on the compressor itself by the AC bracket, and the high side port is on top of the receiver dryer.

R12 to R134a, Why?

I also have a 1984 944 NA, still running perfectly on R-12. Way cooler than the wife's RAV4 that runs on 134a. Why in the world do you want to change a great set up to a mediocre at best set up? R-12 cools much much better than 134a, it is perfectly legal on our cars and it is less prone to leaks having larger molecules. Just check your system for leaks, usually dried up o rings, you will do that for 134a anyway and pick up 3 cans of R-12 on evilbay for about $70 and you will be happy and save money too. I did mine more than 8 years ago and still cools perfectly with no leaks. Just my 2 cents of thought.

R134 in a 944 works great.
I have measured 29 degree air coming out of the vents on my early car. I lived for 14 years in the inland desert of socal where it is 85-105F for 8 months of the year and it always did well.

R12 works great too, if you can get it and find someone who can charge it for you.

Been using the r12 compatible stuff from envirosafe on eBay, works good. Had to make a connector from an old style fill hose.
