Cam Timing..can advancing/retarding help performance?

Should I advance or retard my cam for better performance? I am in the middle of my belt replacement, so I figured now would be a good time to ask. My car has the regular bolt ons (chip/one off cold air intake, supertrapp muffler) is there like a tooth change that may help? I drive in all rpm's...and will run 17's with a low pro tire (smaller than stock).
Thanx,
Greyson

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

...and here class, we see SoCal demonstrating the ABC's of proper replies to questions:

A: Accuracy - his answer is indeed 100% accurate.
B: Brevity - No wasted words, direct and to the point.
C: Clarity - No doubt at all what he meant to say.

Now I see where I went wrong. Point A, Accuracy: Seldom more than almost right, usually wrong to the point of flirting with lawsuits against me.
Also, take note of B. Brevity: Closest thing I get to that is "Beverage", alas the more of that I have, the less concerned with brevity I become.
I also feel compelled to round it off by realizing that I understand to get the gist of the meaning to the point C. Clarity. Seldom do I even know what the hell I'm saying, let alone anyone trying to wade through my abysmal sentance structure. (If a pile of ruble can be construed as "structure"). To quote So Cal's reply to a recent post of mine: "What?".

But!!!

You can get the cam from the later model 944 NA's and put it on the early heads. Gives you a bit more exhaust timing. Some have custom grind cams; would be interesting to hear from them.

In the late 70's when I actually had a new 924, I was looking at a few performance enhancements other than down hill in a stiff breeze. One of these was a means of advancing the cam with a lever in the cockpit or a centrifugal counter weight advancement system.
