Starting condition, leaky injector?

Today was a pretty nice day in Colorado, and since I had the day off I uncovered the 951 to go run some errands.

Anyway it had been sitting for about 4 weeks and I turned it over and the starter stopped for a second then continued cranking until it caught. Drove it around a bit and only turned it off for a few minuets between stops and it would start fine.

My last errand was a haircut and that took about an hour. Cranked the car over and again, a thunk noise and the starter stopped then continued cranking.

Two thinks I can think of are a bad starter, no problem I have another on the shelf, or a leak injector that is filling the cylinder.

Thoughts?

Not sure about the 951 injectors, but you can pull the spark plugs and see if one is wet with gas.

Scott,

Does it blow out a black cloud of smoke when its starts up?

Or sometimes with a leaky injector you need to hold the throttle open fully to even get the car to start (think flooded). Are you having any of these symptoms?

P.S. Scott, did you get the e-mail I sent you about your old k26/6?

Thanks,
Rob

Sorry Rob I did get it. I just got back from a disaster recovery job in Hong Kong. I'll ship it out this week.

As for the problem, no no black cloud at all. And it still starts right up when the starter is cranking normally. The more I look at this post the more I lean toward the starter. I suppose it could have a bad solenoid and its just shutting it down mid crank.

I suppose that once the starter is hot it just stops doing it. I wish sometimes things would just quit instead of fading away.

No problem Scott. I'm not in any rush for it, I just didn't want you waiting on me.

Thanks Again,
Rob

Just fixed my injectors yesterday. Blew out the seals on mine - the injector tested fine out of the car.

Starting condition - excessive cranking with no-start

RPM's a little "off"

Was your RPM off higher or lower? I find mine idles at about 1000 RPM when cold and then goes up to about 1500 after a few mins.
I am trying everything to fix the fuel problem and hadn't thought of the injectors leaking yet.

It did idle low right after this happened, then picked right back up.
