928S Pro Touring Build
After building a 911 Rothmans Tribute and RS tribute, I have decided to switch gears and build what I guess you would call a Pro Touring 928. If you are a Porsche purist, then I don't think this thread is for you.
I bought a 1983 129,000 mile 928s California smog legal 5 speed. I will be replacing the engine with a LS3 e-Rod 430hp smog legal for California crate engine. In addition I purchased a 2004 C5 Z06 manual 6 speed. I will be redoing all of the suspension, bushings, steering and a lot of other things as I come across them. I have read a few threads of amazing 928 builds, which has given me insight and I hope to provide additional information to others who are thinking about a build. Here is the car before I started taking apart last weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Removed passenger side front suspension. Had to cut off upper ball joint, it was crossed threaded. I had already ordered new ones so no big deal

Got the drivers side suspension off, steering rack, along with sway bar, radiator and AC condensor. All of these will be addressed going forward.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am currently working with Ron Davis Radiators building a radiator that fits stock location with LS3 Plumbing, including engine oil cooler. I will be addressing the steering rack rebuild along with new ball joints on arms as the parts come in. I take lots of pictures, so if there is something specific, please ask, I might have it. Next step is to remove everything in engine compartment to prep for new coating. Last edited by Blagave; 08-29-2017 at 05:56 PM.. |

Very Interesting Project -
Hey Blagave, This project will be very interesting to follow. No doubt - it will be something that only a very select few master technicians with a tremendous range of skills could successfully complete.. But mercy - why not just buy a race ready Z06 Vette with a body kit and paint Porsche across the back end. It would probably perform better and save your dad a WHOLE LOT of money
![]() Please keep us posted and best of luck, Michael

With so few 928's remaining in stock condition, it is kind of sad to see another one dismantled. There are so many other cars to modify. Yes, a race ready Z06 Vette for $110K out the door, ready to blow your socks off, pick up chicks or otherwise wrap yourself around a tree.

We can argue all day long about modifying a car and what is acceptable and what is not in the eyes of others. Making the 928 better to be more enjoyable and reliable is not a bad thing. The reason there are so few 928's around is.....the cars were not all that great to begin with and that, is why the cars have fallen by the way side and are so inexpensive to buy. Anyhow, I don't want the build thread to be about others disapproving of my choices on my build Last edited by Blagave; 08-26-2017 at 05:49 AM.. |

Installed new rear hub bearing. I had a tool I made up to install the bearings and did one with tool and tried the press for the second one, which worked great.i put the bearing in freezer over night and wiped wd40 on the inside of hub.

Removed up arm ball joints on front suspension. Previous people working on car must gave used a pickle fork to seperate ball joint and gouged aluminum. Doesn't appear an issue. The ball joints have plastic carriage and one of them was destroyed, both ball joints were in bad shape.
