I have just purchased an automatic 1983 928. After a decent search driving cars with only 2nd gear, didn't start, etc.....I finally found a decent car for under 5k.
This is my first experience with a 928, my other Porsche was a 73 914. So, I am sure I will be coming here over the months for the answer to numerous questions. My first question...since the car has no owners manual, I have been pushing a pulling buttons and knobs to see what they do. I have them all except one...the knob on the floor next to the drivers seat. It looks like it is something for the lights but I cannot tell what it does. Can someone help me out? Also, anyone know where I can get an owners manual without spending $80. I looked on ebay to no avail. Is there a major difference between the 83 and 84 model. There is an 84 owner's manual on ebay I can get. The second question, I am almost embarrassed to ask. How do I get the back seats up? I have looked and looked and didn't really pay attention when the seller showed me. Thanks for any answer you can give. Kevin ![]() |

WKD-471-821 ($28.35) Parts number for brand new owner's manual here on Pelican Parts main page; click the link on the top of the forum to get to the main parts page.
Knob next to the seat is the speaker fader knob, which likely does nothing if the factory radio has been replaced. To put the seats back up (assuming you mean forward), there's a lever under the front, or if electric the switches are on the seat's side near the fader knob. Welcome to the 928 world of ownership! |

Thanks for the help.
For the seats, I mean getting the rear seats. They are currently in the down position and I need to get them back up so I can try to squeeze a human in the back seat. Kevin |

On the outside of the seats there should be levers to move to unlock the seat position, if the levers are missing, use a screwdriver in the slots to slide the mechanism to the top of the seat.
Congrats. What state are you in? |

Thanks guys, I just got both back seats up, broken levers....screw driver got them both up.
When I had my 914 I used a Haynes manual for repairs...I noticed that the Chilton manual only goes up to 81. Is it worth buying for my 83? Is there another "928 for dummies" type book out there? Kevin |

As of right now I think the factory service manuals are out of print. They come up on eBay frequently; $300+. There is a fellow who has converted the factory manual to CD, I can't recall his name and contact info but I believe he sells them on eBay also; you really are far better get any version of the FSM than the Chilton's.

The Knob
That Knob next to your seat....If it has a headlight symbol on it, and is located next to the fader knob, and your car is Euro delivery, that would be a headlight height adjuster...made to slightly raise and lower the headlights if you load down the trunk with weight...(no kidding) IT is an unbelievably fragile and complex fully self contained system of plastic hoses a small servo, hydraulic fluid, and two small pistons at the headlights....If it works you are blessed, if not, forget about fixing it.

Porsche Workshop Manuals 911, 912, 924, 928, 930, 944, 964, 993, Boxster, Cayenne, Ca
I came across this searching for a manual on CD
http://www.classifiedads.com/ad398757.htm Porsche Workshop Manuals 911, 912, 924, 928, 930, 944, 964, 993, Boxster, Cayenne, Carrera Complete Manuals for EVERY Model 1983-2000. 911, 912, 928, 936, 944, 944 Turbo, 944-S2, Boxster, and Cayenne. We have dedicated manuals for each model or you can get the service-only general set that covers all models for major repair and maintenance. KNOW WHAT THE PROS KNOW! With this set of manuals you will probably know MORE than most of them. Order the "All Models" Porsche Workshop repair and maintenance manuals.(PMODS) This is the complete set for each model, just like the ones used by the dealerships and factory repair shops, all on CD ROM. Complete repair procedures for all Porsche models from 1983 through 2000, including 944 S-2 16 valve engines and a separate 336 page manual just on the 944 Turbo. If this were hardcopy, you'd need another room to store all the books! If the answer you need is not here, then it does not exist! The full set of manuals in hardcopy for any one of these models bought from a certain German manufacturer would cost more than $400.00 each! This service set includes the Manuals CD, and Installation CD, and two Installation 3.5" floppy disks. Installation on yur computer is required for full functionality. Our low price is a tiny fraction of the factory hardcover cost, and is practically nothing compared to the money you save on the first repair you do using the Factory Repair Manual as your guide to get it right the first time. Remember, the German version of Mr. Goodwrench charges up to $125.00 an hour to work on your Classic Porsches. Our last timing and balance shaft replacement cost by a local shop was over $700.00, but using the Factory Repair Manuals, you can do the job in under 4 hours for just the cost of parts. Any serious 911, 928, boxster, 944 or 944 Turbo owner ought to jump on this deal just to be in a position to know enough about the car not to get ripped off at the dealer. Listed price includes $5.95 shipping cost for first CD order. Extra copies are available. You may purchase up to 4 sets at once at the $39.00 listed price, and all but the first ship free, for a savings of up to $17.85 on shipping and insurance. Package includes Service manuals CD, Install CD and two 3.5" floppy install disks. IF YOU WANT A DEDICATED FACTORY REPLICA SERVICE MANUAL ON CD THAT COVERS ONLY YOUR PARTICULAR MODEL SERIES, CONTACT US AT document.write('PORSCHEPOWER@PLASTICEXPERTS.COM') PORSCHEPOWER@PLASTICEXPERTS.COM, AND WE WILL ARRANGE FOR YOUR EXACT MANUAL TO BE SHIPPED TO YOU WITHIN 24 HOURS, AT A GREAT PRICE.
