Alternator help
My transmission was rebuilt, and the now shifts perfectly, but the Transmission shop killed two batteries over the last week. The mechanic pointed out that my alternator is bad.
Can I use a gm alternator? Where can a guy get one of those of so.. ? |

I don't think it's bad, the 928 alternator just doesn't charge very much sub. 2k revs. If you normally use it as a commuter, you should be fine.
They're all like that ![]()

I've got two running, both on 84 USA cars.
88 camaro 105 A optional alternator is the one to select, along with the separately purchased matching pigtail from the parts store shelf. If you are serious, I've got some good pictures and write up. The pigtail has 4 possible electrodes. The blue exciter wire is applied to the L terminal. Others are covered over with silicon sealant. Pigtail plugs into the alternator. Hot wire lug is applied to the + terminal. I might have replaced the hot lug with a slightly smaller heavy brass ring terminal for convenience. I had to choose a slightly smaller grooved belt, add three washers to the pivot bolt for spacing, and replace the tensioning winder with a single nut/bolt. I pried the alternator tight, then tightened it down. Have about 25K miles on one, 10K on the other.

Why not just have your existing alternator rebuilt? My local alternator shop rebuilds them for me for between 70-90 dollars. New bearings, new diodes, new contacts.

Oh gawd, don't get me started on Rebuild Shops. Trust me, do NOT do this. You may have a good one local to you stepson, but most of them are crap. My rebuild experience ending me going to Small Claims Court. Either New or Remanufactured <-- preferably from NAPA.

Only rebuild I would consider would be Bosch factory rebuild. The 84 alternator is probably a Paris-Rhone, btw.
Looking back, I guess I never did a great write up, but helped folks so many times that it seemed like it. But there are some segments that will help. Here's one. Open the link on the first post for a snapshot. Here's another Delco Alternator Installed - Rennlist Discussion Forums Here's one with the notched bracket. It you notch the bracket, then you don't need get rid of the tensioner screw arrangement. See picture at post #22. Its on an early car, so he had to use the original pulley (v- pulley swap). The 84, though, has a multi-grooved wide belt and the Camaro delco pulley is the same, so no swap needed. OB-SOB Alternator upgrade - Page 2 - Rennlist Discussion Forums

MPDano,
You could possibly be right about that. I may just have a good shop that knows what they're doing. That being said, I've got an acquaintance who put a Delco alternator on his '81 and has had to replace it every year I've know him. (going for his 5th year and 5th alternator). I dunno what that says necessarily, but I think I'll stick with what Porsche put on there originally.

First of all, I agree with Stepson.
Use original equipment if you can. The Delco is a little cheaper in the short run and very accessible. Depending on the rebuilder, often local, you might have to replace it more often. Here's a reference to a link: Go to Rock Auto . com Type 1988, Chevrolet, Camaro, V6 into the search line. Choose electrical, then alternator. They show 85 amp and 100 amp. They are the same alternator wound slightly differently, both delco cs130. They can be wound to higher amperage, too. I've seem them at 100, 105 and 115. Its the 100 amp unit in this particular company listing. At Advance Auto or Pep Boys or Kragen or whatever you boys use in Kalifornia, the countergirl will not know what a delco 130 alternator is. They will only know by car. So, for ease, we say "use the 88 camaro" as the communication cue for the counterperson. There are two, and the high output of the two is what you choose. Other cars use the same unit. 88 camaro is easy to remember. Good luck with it! That black 84 is stunning, still. Be sure to sort out your electrical gremlins.

******** - bad; 928Int good
Ok, I followed the advice, ordered a GM alternator from rock auto. When it arrived we noticed that it was completely frozen. I couldn't even turn the pulley/wheel. That will be the last time I use ********.
I returned the ******** alt, and drove up to 928Int in orange county. Tom at 928Int had the OEM rebuild/replacement, they event swapped the pulley for me. We installed it last night, now it charges above 14.x at idle... I am good to go. Now I can drive it back to the transmission shop and have them fix my transmission, although that's another story...

Trans...
Well I haven't paid him a dime, he claimed that no payment is required until it shifts perfectly in all gears with no leaks. I think the guy is honest, he just needs more time, and he needed the charging system working to finish the job.
In terms of the plan, I'll leave that to him. I need to buy a commuter car soon, with the Porsche down and the Benz totaled in junk yard, I am hutrting. I am looking at 2003 5 series bmw's , I've always liked those cars...

I kick-started my process by eating testosterone booster pills until my appetite vanished. Fasted for a week, then my body started going crazy, not knowing what to do with the fat stores. I quit eating junk food, fast food, sugars, energy drinks (can put on 29 pounds per year), started exercising regularly, ......essentially doing everything right, and now my body has become "re-set", and no longer tries to store fat, and my muscle mass is increasing all the time, mostly because of my very simple diet loaded with mainly fish protein.
