Need new clutch on C4- need decent manual
So I had my car in at my local specialist to get a clutch replacement- mines slipping under heavy load- like accelerating onto the highway- they had it for a month and hadn't even started the job because they're so far behind (why they ask for cars that early is beyond me) so since it still runs fine and I love driving it- I picked it up and told them to call me to drop it off on the day they can actually start it- that was now two weeks ago- glad I did!
It's an expensive job- close to $5k just for the clutch because they say on my Carrera 4 the engine needs to be dropped (1990- solid torque tube?) but I'm thinking to myself- it's just a clutch for crying out loud- how hard can it be? So I'm imight tackle it myself. I'm a competent mechanic- have tooled most my my own cars for years- rebuilt tons of early V8's and Toyota 4 cylinders in my youth and even some Subaru's- I went and looked through my Adrian Streather book and there is no 'how to" replace a clutch on the Carrera 4 in there. Do any of you know of a manual (Haynes/ etc) that would cover that? How hard is it from any of you that have done it? I'm planning on putting in the standard dual-mass flywheel/ clutch- no lightweight anything because I like to drive it and not have it stall at stops all the time- and I looked at the workshop manual but can't even find a complete set for under thousands of dollars and in English- I'm also long term considering a top end rebuild to address the oil leaks (floods more like it) on the motor- but it runs so well otherwise I don't want to spend north of $15-20k just to fix oil leaks. Any workshop/ repair manual resource you all can point me to that have been through this? |

I do about a clutch job every 2 months. I drop Porsche and Ferrari engines every month. For me, this job would be a 5 on a scale of 10, but I am at the extreme side of mechanic ability.
A 964 C4 needs a bit of a trick to remove the front drive shaft going to the front two wheels. Other than that, it's a straight forward of an engine removal job for an air cool 911. You don't need a work shop manual. Just get into it and post questions when you are stuck.

Here are some hints:
Remove bumper. Need two good jacks and two tall jack stands Read up on G50 gearbox separation from engine. Pay attention to how to remove the cross shaft. Might need a smaller guide tube Practice installing the throw out bearing, a press maybe needed
