Valve Guide Question
I dropped my car off @ the shop last week to get the valve ajusted because they started get loud again(only after 1500 miles)
The shop said it will ready about 12:30 today so I got a ride over , to pick it up. Well when he started it, We could still hear the noise. So he check the valves on that side again to see if he made a mistake. Top are tight bottom are good. so what is that noise. WE discover that the valve is moving around in the guide on two of the heads. One was really bad. So now we has to break the engine down and send the head to the machine shop. They said it will be about $3500 for the labor, and $1000 for machine shop and parts. Does this sound right? Does this issue sound correct ? Has anyone had this happen to them? Thanks in advance. Derek

very loose guides can cause valve tick. it tends to come and go as you listen to it. doing just the two heads isn't a good idea. i would hope he's doing a complete job. if this is your C2, $3500 is a pretty good price on labor for a full valve grind. better clarify. $1000 for a machine shop to do six heads is about right, including guides and seals.

Happened to me at 51k miles. I'd heard that 964 series had that problem after I bought it. Full top end rebuild ran about $6k. That included moon cutting the cylinders, 7-10hp increase, still passes smog.
Get the complete top end done, if 2 have gone out, the others can't be far behind, $6k now for complete, or $3.5k a couple of times. Good Luck, Don |

Those piston tops look pretty black to me! Looks like a lot of carbon build-up. What do the combustion chambers look like? Black like the pistons? How thick is it?
You might want to clean that up a bit, now that you have a chance. I had a lot of carbon, and would have loved a chance like this to clean it all up. I have this OCD type disease where I want to see bright, shiny pistons (which I know is not possible, but I want it anyways).

If this isn't a daily driver then defintily an RS lwf& clutch
other thinks to at least think about either Sodium filled or undercut exhaust valves, Intakes are already Na filled but undercut ss would be nice. al the gaskets and rubber parts at the tensioner feeds, intake, etc.

OK,
So I went with the LWF complete set up(THe Kit has everything! the shop was really suprised as I of all the stuff it had. New RS ring gear Flywheel, clutch, bolts, seals ,shafts and bearings =$1450 ) On the heads new seats, seals, spring and resurfaced. All new seals on the rest of the engine without spliting the case. That black on the pistons is very thin, they are cleaing that up. But the walls all look good We are also replacing the outer cv boots, new H&R reds , and Shocks. With TRG sways and new bushings. And now I am out of money
