engine number is 964 and misc 993 dyi questions

Hi,

I'm new to the world of Porsche and when changing my oil for the first time noticed the engine number doesn't start with 993. Was the case used (and many other parts) as evolutionary from the really nice looking 964?

So far, new pollen filters installed, front plate bracket and plate installed, headlights cleaned, now oil changed and glovebox fixed. I bought three belts when at parts heaven in Hayward.

The two smaller ones are correct, but the larger AC belt sold to me was 13 x 1085 not 12.5 X 1085 as stated by manual. Would this work or should I take it back?

The clutch pedal made squishy noise and provided a different feeling one day in heavy traffic. This was also after letting my wife use the car. It seemed not to be there the next day.

I thought I just check the fluid level. Any other simple service suggestions?

The casting # on the block is 964*****, that casting # is used even on 997Gt3 and tt blocks

If you search for this part (999-192-363-50-M21) on our host, it is also listed as 13x1085, even though the corresponding parts diagram says 12.5x1085. So my guess is that the 13mm belt will work just fine.

Did the use of the 964 block skip a generation? I was under a 996 GT3 the other day, and it had a 996 part number. I was confused because I had been told that the 997 GT3 used the 964 block, so I expected the 996 GT3 to be the same.

No, all the 996 and 997 GT3 & turbo blocks that I have seen carry the 864 casting #

The normal models of course do not, they have the new style wet sump block
like this one

Hmmm, the block looked very much like my 964 and nothing like my 997 (or your picture). But it definitely had a 996 part number, just to the side of the split case. I pointed it out to the mechanic and he was surprised, too. I guess I should have taken a picture. I called the mechanic to get the exact part number, but the car is gone now but will be back in a couple of weeks; I hope to update this thread later with more details.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I finally got pictures of the GT3 block w/ 996 part numbers:

They must have had new molds made. So much of the bottom end off the 997GT3 and GT3/RS can be used right back to the 964 blocks
flywheels
clutches
cranks
oil pumps
