Mobil 1 V-Twin and some questions

I know the oil subject comes up more times that anyone here can count, but after some searching through the archives, I still have a few questions.....

I am changing the oil on my new-to-me 993 and I am leaning towards the Mobil 1 V-Twin oil. Questions are:

1) What is the recommended drain interval on this oil? I have read that it’s 1500-2000 miles because of the lack of detergents, is this correct?

2) Will running this oil really damage the cats? I have read that it will, but at what rate? Cats destroyed in 5k miles? 15k miles? 50k miles?

3) If it is, in fact, that damaging to the cats, will they have any ill effect to the O2 sensors?

TIA!

IMO with this many unknowns, i would not use this product.
are you considering it because of potentially higher Zn levels?

Again, IMO, the concerns you raise are higher risk than running a known quantity oil will fractionally lower Zn levels.

I have had good success with M1 5 - 40 turbo diesel oil.

cheers

Craig

Yes, I am considering it because of the higher Zn levels. It’s not fractional either, the levels of Zn are MUCH higher.

I am not overly concerned about the Cats because I was thinking about installing a DACH X by-pass anyway, but I have yet to do it. So, the high levels of Zn in the oil may just push me over the edge to do it sooner rather than later. I was more curious as to HOW LONG I had before it did damage or ruined the cats or would there be any ill effect on the O2 sensors.

I, too, like the 5/40 diesel and run it in my wife’s Audi, but I really want something heavier than that for the 993 and for the summer months.

Thanks!

The Zinc and Phosphorous will be bad for the cat. Put the bypass on as soon as possible. Cats are expensive and you will need to keep it fresh for the emissions testing times. If you only use the cat at those times, I think the good oil will not cause you to fail the test.

Ironically, I switched from Mobil 1 Synthetic to Brad Penn Synthetic at the recommendation of other Porsche owners/shop who race and build Porsche's. Yesterday, while running a DE at Willow Springs Raceway, I noticed the car was running much cooler, as compared to last month at the same track.

Any comments on the Brad Penn oil brand being used;

Welcome!

Was this the Day Away AX @ SOW with Skip and Suesan?

Tell us about it?

This is an OK oil to use and it has plenty of detergents for a moderate to extended oil change...There are better oils for the price though as M1 V-twin is an expensive brew...For that price I'd use Redline or Motul...Or use an HDEO like Rotella or Chevron Delo 15w40 if you are only driving on the street.

You switched from "Regular" Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 "V-Twin"?

It's a little bit cheaper than Redline (and others), but not by much (I found it for $9.89/qt). I guess I am looking at it as more of a "convenience" thing as I can walk into just about any FLAPS and find MB1 V-Twin and other are probably going to be mail order.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate any/all input.

IMHO, if you are spending $10/qt, use Redline, or Amsoil!
M1 is not a full synth anymore, it's a blend, & BradPenn is much better.

If you want use a aircooled bike oil, use Motul.

Redline also makes a additive with all the goodies in it.

For the past couple of years, I have been running Amsoil Euro 5-40 in my C4, & it's great, very low consumption, very low oil temps, & it's got the good stuff in it. It gets changed every year, or 10kmi.

If you want a great oil use Motul 300v. A bit pricey, but, you will have no worries.

Sadly, "Regular" Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 V-Twin are not created equal.

It's my understanding that Mobil 1 V-Twin is made from a full synthetic base stock.

I do understand what you are saying about the price point and the other options out there. Just trying to weigh my options.

Based on another Pelican members oil analysis of brand new 300v, it looks like it's 1130ppm of Zinc and 1139ppm of phosphorus. Based on what I have gathered, that right on the edge of being considered "low". Great oil to be sure, but the Mobil 1 V-Twin/Racing 4T comes in at a staggering 1700ppm Zinc and 1600ppm phosphorus.

It's important to realize that a virgin oil analysis cannot and will not show us many of the proprietary additives that companies like Motul or Mobil use in their lubricants. There is much more to an oil than just ZDDP...in fact, some of the newer low SAPS oils are delivering used oil reports that are stellar...and they have around 700 PPM zinc....

I hear ya' and I am really just trying to educate myself, so your input it appreciated. After years of running "Regular" MB1 or Shell Rotella T Synthetic, I have been reading about all these new (relative term here) API SM rated oils and I'd like to get away from them. Maybe I have been reading too much and it just has me freaked out, but that's a different issue. The MB1 V-Twin has a certain appeal to me because I travel A LOT with the car and I like the idea of being able to pick up a quart or two at my FLAPS if I am in a pinch.

BLT, the consensus on which oil to use in our aircooled engines, and this comes from people with 20 plus years experinence in building high performance Porsche engines, is BRAD PENN grade 1 20w-50 high performance oil or Swepco. For info on these oils go here Oils: What motor oil should I use? Which oil is best for my Porsche or aircooled engine?
Read it and make up your own mind, but either of these oils will do the job . I use Brad Penn which is half the price of Mobil 4T and every bit as good.
Check out this site. The Oil Warehouse No affiliation.
