964 vs 911 on a track
Just out of curiosity since both my cars are undergoing engine upgrades and it's winter time here.
Both my cars are stock but lowered to below ROW 964 C4 with soon to be efi&itb so let's say 300bhp weight 3200lbs that gives it a pwr/weight ratio of 10,67lbs/bhp 18" wheels 225/40 and 265/40 74' 911 2.7 soon to be efi&itb( upgraded engine internals) as well let's say 200bhp this only weights 2200lbs so 11lbs/bhp. 17" wheels 205 tires on all 4 ( narrow body) Which one do you think will be the fastest around a track? Powerwise seems to be the same, so it's heavy var with wider tires or lighter car with skinnier tires? Stock cars only upgraded engine at the moment, both will get upgraded suspension and get on a diet at some point.

I would say the 964 just because of tire size.

At roughly the same power to weight I'm faster in my '88 than the the 964's, but it's also track dependent. The cars are better on different parts of the track, with the 964 much better in a straight line and under braking.
At a track like buttonwillow it's no contest, the 911 is gone. But at Cal Speedway I have to drive the balls of the car in the infield to create a gap that evaporates by the end of the braking zone in T3 (end of straightaway). The lighter 911 is much better on tires late in a run, so take from that what you will. |

the 964 is a better platform for a track car, better brakes, coil overs, better trans, however it's HEAVY
the lighter car will corner better less weight to throw around, so it depends on how light you can make the 964, I have a 80 turbo look track car with3.6 that only weigh's 2200, it get's it done.

That is probably not the right answer. For a GT class car, I would say that the 911 is a better platform. Weight is the enemy of the 964 chassis.
For the PCA alphabet classes, the 964 may be "better". I don't really know anything about the PCA class structure, but I would assume that the 964-based and 911-based cars run in different classes anyway. |

Tires will really limit the '74 at the track with only 205's all around. Put some flares on the rear and it'd be close.
Here's the PCA "F" class which puts a wide variety of different 911's in the same class. You can see the power and weights allowed for both. These classes run Hoosiers and there's really not much difference in the size of wheel and tire you'd put on say, a '73RS and a 964. I'm sure the guys racing in this class know which one is the best in class, but as a starting point they are viewed as "equal".
