Best way to create temporary race numbers on car?
Doing a PCA HPDE event... Unlike SCCA/Road America/Drag Strip, they require race numbers on the car for identification...
Any rules on making these? Can you just print the number out on a printer and tape to your car? Magnetic numbers would be nice eventually, but this is a "temporary number." Says shoe polich isn't ok, but race tape is. What the heck is race tape? I dont want to paste duct tape to my car... Painters tape ok? Any suggestions appreciated... |

Use contrasting masking or painters tape.

I got a sheet of magnetic material, traced two ovals and cut them out. I purchased a set of vinyl numbers that were regulation size for my club. I can run as a few different numbers depending on which numbers are taken or available.
No reason not to use painters tape. Some folks use it in leading edges as well for protection. |

I bought a roll of vinyl from ebay in yellow
before every event - I print out the numbers (big fonts) on a piece of paper - then cut them out with an exacto knife - I also have some magnetic sign material - but found in Florida that it was clouding my paint a little - so just put the vinyl numbers on and haven't had any issues since ![]() Last edited by JeremyD; 05-05-2016 at 05:38 AM.. |

Try to get a number that works good for easy tape "layout" to make it look nicer? And don't choose a taboo number like 888 or 808 or 818. The joke is that the number is the same when you're upside down...........

painters tape takes a lot less time.
I used plasti-dip and stencils- it will last the whole year, or one event. very easy to deal with ![]() |

shelving paper too works well with the printer pattern idea to cut out the digits

hobby lobby-
I like it more than the painters tape, and its more secure than magnetic numbers. the down side is it takes about 20 minutes to put on the first time. |

You can print out #s on any home color printer, tape them to the quarter windows(most places #s on each side are all that is necessary. Some events do require a rear # as well), they only need to be ~4" high. Do use bright contrasting colors, at WGI the last couple of days there was a BMW w/ dark tinted windows and black #s that were virtually unreadable.

blue painters tape, quick and easy, can be applied and removed at the track and you probably already have it in the garage

I use black electrician's tape on my white car for auto-cross, and black duct tape for big tracks... neither peels off at speed, and they don't leave a residue (I remove after each event).
I also clean/polish after each event, so I'm applying on a nice, clean, smooth surface. Painter's tape is OK too, but I've found it peels off too easily.

I did exactly what Bill V. suggested, literally used plain printer paper. Im no photoshop expert but made a oval that I knew would fit the rear quarter, found a decent font, made sure the numbers were at least 4" high. Then put painters tape on the backside edges. Later I trimmed it so it would be a even 1/2" all the way around the oval.

I use painters tape. Eventually will probably look into doing the magnet numbers in the future, but the painters tape is easy. I have even forgot mine at home before and every time I've asked someone at the track they've had it.

I've seen lots of magnets blow off on track at speed. If you use them you have to tape the leading edges..

Best to have high contrast. I have seen too many blue tape numbers on dark paint.

Well, ended up printing out the number on my printer, and attaching with electrical tape. Stayed on, no issues....
