Wow, after looking at these new pictures, I would have to agree that this car has some authenticity issues. As I said previously, the measurement of the thinner sheet metal would be a super-definitive indicator, beyond and above these other anomalies that have been pointed out.

Spencer, the fellow at Fantasy Junction, has offered to do what is necessary to prove / disprove the authenticity of this car. Anyone know how to measure the sheet metal? Simple micrometer?

Alright gentlemen; I work at Fantasy Junction and have spent much of the morning examining what has been put forth both here and on the early 911s forum. We recognize the inconsitencies in the font, spacing, and alignment of the chassis stamp, in addition to variations in the type of chassis plate employed. We are also ready to consider the possibility that there may be validity to the statements made about the authenticity of this car. At present, we are actively researching the issue and have attempted to contact the owner of the car. The car is here on consignment, and our ultimate goal is to represent the car as honestly and completely as possible. We are appreciative of your input and will keep you posted on developments.

very simple on the sheet metal issue. can you twist the trunk panel (one with the vin on it behind the gas tank) with your thumb and fingers? a standard chassis car will be very stiff with little give. A lightweight car will feel very flexible. If there is not too much paint on the surfaces you can also feel the thickness differences. Best to have another production line 911 sitting there to compare directly

Yes, the 'twist test' would work on ANY of the cars, touring and lightweight, that were series one or series two cars. This being #406, it is a series 1 car, and would've been manufactured with the thinner sheetmetal, regardless of how it eventually left the factory, touring or lightweight.

FWIW, Have a look at the other cars Fantasy Junction has in stock... quite an eclectic collection! Ferrari 250 GTE, Jag series 1 E type with "Eagle" mods, an Alfa ambulance... even one of those Talbot Lago replicas from the 90's. Neat stuff.

We contacted the owner and are sending him the evidence presented both here and elsewhere. He did not seem pleased. We also removed the passenger knee pad and photographed the production number. I will be calling PCNA first thing Monday morning to determine if the production number agrees with Porsche's records.

Wow...we really busted this one! I suspect the guy who currently owns it was duped! Wonder how much he paid for it? This might be a case where a "flipper" was had!

In any case, the car should be traced back to whomever did the work on this car. VIN tampering on this level is a pretty serious crime.

He was the first to call. As soon as we sent out our mailer (we send an email out after each car has been photographed and described), the phone started ringing, which is how I ended up here. I've been lurking for some time (though mostly poking through classifieds I admit, which is how I missed this car the first go round), but now it looks like I'm jumping in head-first!
