I know I read the whole thread and I still don't have a clue. It's very suspicious especially the trunk plate vin with abnormal spacing. Seems like the whole thing was a bit anticlimactic. I would guess it's a fake but not 100% sure. Maybe 97%.

I report a lot of bogus listings to eBay but they're the ones where the cars are offered at phony buy it now prices which are 10 to 15% of the cars real value. I dont know if this car is fake, do know the owner is an rude jerk but thats not a good reason to report this car as a fake to ebay. On the other had he reported me to ebay for questioning the credibility of this car and pointing out thats its listed in other places for 10 to 15k.

Coupla things:

- VIN plate...notice that the notorioisly "correct" guys at Gunnar Racing kept the VIN plate white, like the rest of the trunk and car...and didn't do the plate matte black.

I hope we help noodle this one to the ground.....

A little noodling here...My trunk is "overspray green", the same color as the car...BUT The VIN stamping in the trunk plate is painted with a black paint...appears brushed on.

Yea it may have been, some others here know the site where it was listed better than I. It was in german so I dont think they stole the description.

I think that a buyer, at whatever the price, at least for a rather average Porsche would and should be quite happy with the "unpimped auto."

After reading 14 pages of this mystery, I have lifted my 911, and documented every VIN and stamping it's got..kneepads, radio...the works...and have come to the conclusion that I am indeed driving a clever FAKE of a 1979 SC ROW.

I'm not even really sure it's a Porsche at this point.

So many pieces have been replaced with newer parts from Pelican....oh wait, never-mind...that was me.

Either way every time I get in and kiss the apex and slide so gently to track out my heart swells with joy..... much like touching that first boob.

Right on! Touchy-feely is what it's all about, I reckon'! ...top is off, sun is comin' out soon, and my freshly smoked Copper River salmon is lookin' perfect, if I do say so myself, which in fact I do.....
Feels like a Porsche, so gots to be real!
VIN is Italian for what?

Uh, it's the money, honey. (That's what the lady said.) You see, counterfeit RS's and even counterfeit "S's" are making the scene..when values get to 6 figure levels, some not so nice people come out from under their rocks...It is a federal felony to tamper with VIN's...

The seller of the OTHER 406 has sent all the pix and discussion regarding this yellow car to the owner in europe.

Dunno that we will hear of what happens next, but obviously in the real 406 owner's interest to follow up on it

Well, now this is a bit different, isn't it?

Perhaps it's because Prescott Kelly is an old friend, and I know he's got more Porsche knowledge that 99.99 of the free world, AND he has high standards. And Jim Newton is very well known for his award winning work, and exacting standards.

Plus, the seller seems more straight up right from the start.

I don't know the condition of course, and the color change is, to me, disappointing, but I feel a lot better about the lineage.

We'll see.

The PO should have kept that RS original black - uncommon colour.

Does not hurt that he puts proper photos of everything on his website. The other guy arguing with everyone left a sour taste in my mouth and feel everyone felt the same way.

Old friend of mine had a real RS in Germany back in the late 80's. He passed away about 1991/2 and we tried to save it but the wife was not easy to contact. Hope it found a good home.

Road Scholars is a reputable outfit; I know they trade in very nice original cars. They sold a few 911 CS's a year or so ago, one to a well-known Porsche collection in the South. Even though its on eBay, I would definitely feel more comfortable bidding on it than the other one if I was in the market....wish I was!

Just checked - yes indeed, this car is from Bob Ingram's collection - check it out at:
http://www.ingramcollection.com/porsche/1973/911_carrera_rs_2.7/

IMHO I think its the real thing! (BTW, I'm not a shill, just a 911 CS owner who is a little familar with the collection.)

Yeah... B. Ingram doesn't own junk. I wish he'd put his entire collection on his website for us all to see.
