Do Your Michelin Pilot Power Look like this
Just had my rear tyre go wonky on the way home, Take a look
Any ideas what has gone wrong? I had plenty of time to contemplate the tyre as I was waiting for recovery

Impressive! It may be one of the tires under the recall. Check it out for sure. Glad you got stopped before things went even uglier. Where do you live?

My guess is something like sitting on an unbalanced washing machine during the spin cycle... not that I know what that feels like...

Isn't there a movie where a woman sits on the washer to get off or am just thinking of another of my fantasies. I easily confuse the two.

Wonky tyre
I was riding home on the M3, a motorway here in the uk at about 90mph
It was only when I crossed lanes (3rd to 2nd and back again) that it started to feel weird, it was like the bike was crossing over tram lines, it gave a little shimmy. Then I started getting a lot of vibration and I pulled over to the hard shoulder. My bike was in for its 600 mile service the next day (tomorrow) so i had it recoverd to the main dealers. Everyone there was shocked although one guy did try to tell me it was a punture that had caused it (nothing to do with the fact that I want a replacement for the faulty tyre) When I did stop the bike and take those photos the tyre was still inflated, I know this because I kicked it ![]() The bike is brand new and the tyre now has only 850 miles on it. When I 1st picked the bike up and saw it was fitted with Pilot Powers I checked that they were not the ones included in the recall. These ones are stamped "made in Spain" Does make you wonder if there isn't a bigger problem with these tyres |

If that was caused by a puncture then I need to have a good, long talk with my wife.

Generally speaking this isn't caused by a broken belt (something I've never heard occurring since going to radials. This is clearly a manufacturing defect of a delamination between the belt and the outer carcass of the tire. Obviously pretty much all the way around since it manifested itself in 3 places!!!

If you take a look at this link it shows a letter from Michelin explaining the recal on the French made tyre.
http://www.sidcupmotorcycletyres.co.uk/michelin.htm Suspiciously enough it descibes exactly what happened to my Spanish made Michelin

That is truly hilarious looking (in a scary sort of way) and I hope you got more pictures of it.
I think you were lucky that it even held together as well as it did. Personally, I swore off Michelins a few years ago.

My guess is the inner liner, which keeps the air inside, developed a leak allowing air to get under the tread layer, which in turn delaminated from the belts and swelled under the force.

Finally! MotoGp tire technology trickles down to the masses.
![]() That must have been some ride there supersubby. ![]() I've been using the Pilot Powers since they came out and have been very happy with them. The front recall I shrugged off. That picture of yours makes me go hmmmmmm. Glad you're OK.

mfbRSV, I'm getting to be the same way. It seems the constant raving of the PP's is biting all the original believers in the bud. Had they not spouted out about the rewards of the tires, the demand to fulfil would leave Michelin maintaining their QC. But now they can't mold the rubber fast enough. It seems they are slipping. No pun intended.
In a somewhat related story, my dad worked for a very short term at Kelly Tires near my hometown. In great demand, the bias-ply tires were leaving with less than the advertised 3-ply construction. Many snow tires left with two-ply construction. Some one-ply. It would be nice to be certain that motorcycle tires will be given no such overlooking. But when you see instances like this, it's hard not to question. At the same time, do you realize how many tires they make and this is one of HOW MANY tires they sell? The recall was for the fronts, not the rears. Oddly enough, earlier this year, my Spanish front PP wore prematurely. I'm not sure if it was truely just a Frenchie tire issue. Or is that 'freedom tire?' |
