Project Phoenix - the official thread

In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix (Ancient Greek φοίνιξ phóinīx) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. While the phoenix typically dies by fire in most versions of the legend, there are less popular versions of the myth in which the mythical bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again.

By now I expect all the regulars on this forum are aware of our brethren Mark's garage fire which took out his 930, among other things.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/793621-disaster-strikes-im-finished-graffic.html

And what has transpired since is this community has pulled together to help fund Mark back into a 930, so he can continue to experience the joys of a boosted flat six.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/794490-marks-930-thon-please-read-please-help.html

I wanted to start a new thread specifically focusing on the replacement car I sourced here on the "right" coast. Code name: Project Phoenix.

I acquired this '87 930 at a fairly low price, which I will pass on to Mark. Current fundraising is just shy of 12k, just short of 50% of the cost of the car. Mark has given some indication that he's going to make this happen even if we are unable to get to 100%.

Assuming this all comes together according to "plan" Mark will join us for the July Northeast Turbopalooza event and take ownership of Project Phoenix.

So while fundraising has slowed considerably since the initial weeks, there has been some renewed activity recently, much of it creatively involving the sale of used parts.

Earlier tonight, a generous Pelican pledged to donate anything over 16k paid for this engine will go towards the fundraising. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/789029-built-3-3-turbo-complete-efi-motor-ready-drop-465hp-engine-mgmt.html

Now I am thinking creatively myself. That's a great engine, for a great price. Seems that its been for sale for a while with no takers. Makes me wonder, with all the current market craziness around 930s, and the general market "hard-on" for bone stock examples, what would the market pay for a completely bone stock, fully emission compliant, 100% air pump, EGR, 3LDZ equipped 1987 engine? Project Phoenix has this mythical, completely stock engine. Would be plug and play for you poor California dwellers with the smog Nazis.

Could we sell Phoenix's engine, get the 16-17k that our fellow pelican wants for his EFI engine and swap it in? Is that me being crazy? Thoughts?

I'd leave the factory installed engine in place, too many other other $tuff mark would have to deal with down the line. I think it's great that mark at least gets a down payment out of this fundraising, albeit the full amt is preferable. I think members would be just as happy knowing that mark at least got some of the cost of replacement deferred, still a win if even another dollar isn't raised, jmo.

This is fantastic! So happy for Mark

I understand where you are coming from on the engine idea, but it think there is only one fart on this board that is older than Mark, and he probably has been for about 60 years or so. While a crazy HP efi engine certainly is appealing, I don't think Mark has a screwdriver that can tune a bunch of 1s and 0s
Also, starting out form stock allows him to bond with and create his new car to his liking.

IMHO.

I like the idea What are Marks thoughts ? If he's into it perhaps you could post the stock motor and see what happens. Maybe the owner of the EFI motor will agree to sit on it for a bit. It has been f/s for quite some time. Are there leak down #s on the EFI motor ? Seems like a win win either way. Looks like that was a very well bought 930. Nice work.

Best thing about that engine is the location. We all know the west is the best

Its official. The Sparco Evos fit nicely in my racecar, and nicely to my backside. Thus, these Momos are up for sale, with proceeds to go towards reduction in the Project Phoenix price to Mark.

Kozmo has right of first refusal as he contacted me via PM some weeks ago. Kozmo, let me know if you want these...I'll hold off on posting them in the classifieds until I hear from you.

Note these seats are showing some wear (look at the red upholstered areas). I'm thinking $400 o/b/o for the set. Will include sliders and mounts that will bolt up to a 911/930 if that's needed. I also can throw in a set of G-Force harnesses that look to be unused.

Jacob:

The Old One here,

What about raffling the motor off. 200 tickets at $100 each. Gives everyone a
decent shot at a killer motor for a hundred bucks, Mark gets to draw the winner
at turbopalooza.

I'd be in for another hundred.

Hey Cole!

I like the way you think, but the engine in question is not mine to raffle off. Unless you guys want to raffle the factory stocker currently bolted into project Phoenix? Something tells me you'd put $100 in for an EFI horsepower machine, but not for a 280hp standard CIS EPA legal yawn machine

I'd also buy the first ticket on the stock motor for another $100.
Who wouldn't give a hundred bucks for the chance to have a
spare 3.3 sitting in the corner of their garage. I know exactly
how to remove all that smog s--- and bolt on some HP.

Chris Powell owner of Chris's German in Bellevue has done a leak down with the expected excellent numbers on the EFI motor.

great idea

here's how you'd have to do it tho as it's not Jake's motor to offer, as indicated

an established threshold of 170-participant minimum @ a C-Note each is required to be met to proceed otherwise full refunds and within a set timeframe of say 30-daze

once 170 / $17k is met, benefactor is selected by 3rd party designee and $16k goes to seller / $1k to Mark-a-thon

that could easily work

point of reference tho is: we are @ 108 participants ($12,025!!!) to-date on the 'thon itself... this ASSume's ALL 108 of those anti up again PLUS another 62

dunno

BESIDES:

(games 'o chance are regulated by Commission, so you really "couldn't" do this)

errrrr

regardless... I ADORE THE CREATIVITY AND INSPIRATION GENTZ!!! Too cool... keep the good thoughts a-flowin!

OK, I gotta chime in here. Could I dig a 465hp EFI'd 930? Who wouldn't? Problem is that the intended recipient....one '87 GPW 930 located somewhere in NJ....doesn't currently belong to me, so the choice for such action resides with Jacob at this point. Wouldn't it be cool to raffle off the stock engine, purchase the EFI from Jeff with the proceeds, ship it off to the East coast, and stuff it in? Sounds like one hell of a lot of work for someone(s), all to be accomplished prior to Turbopalooza D-Day.

And here's some irony: Jeff's motor (once he gets it back from Bellvue) is all of 20 miles from me as we speak.

Although I like the raffle concept, the logistics and timing, plus the fact that its easier said than done to find 170 nutters to pop a c-note down (as Paul has mentioned above) makes it a real stretch...the Phoenix is supposed to be running and in proper street trim by the time of July's festivities.

We can't really wait to see if we raise enough funds...will the seller still have the engine if/when we do? Of course any of you guys are welcome to commit your own capital, purchase that EFI motor and run a raffle. Or you are equally welcome to purchase the stocker out of the Phoenix from me for $16k cash and carry, at which point I would forward the cash over to our friend in Bellvue and plug the EFI beast into Phoenix (and when the dust settled that would be a very well travelled motor).

This whole engine thing was my hair brained scheme...does anyone think that the stocker could really fetch that price? And priced at that level, would it move quickly? To put it another way, would any sane person buy the stocker now for 16K when that EFI motor is sitting there on offer for the same price? If the answer is yes, then I think we could do this...otherwise not.

you dawg I really wanted those sparco's. I sat in some and they fit me perfect, and you probably did the same. So I have to pass on the Momo's but I will let a few people know about them.
I also will be putting my stock front and rear bumpers complete with mounting shocks and hardware up for sale if anyone is interested . All proceeds go to "Project Phoenix "

Frankly, I think the EFI motor is over priced. It seems like a really cool motor that's been well built. I also realize it cost allot more than the asking price to have built. Unfortunately
we all know when it comes to selling motors like these we're lucky to get .50 on the dollar
I personally do think a stock 3.3 turbo is worth more than a modded 3.2
It would be a hoot though

Was poking around the car today. Noted option code 220 - means the car has LSD.

A shot of the business end

Some undercarriage shots

More here '87 930 GPW - Asbury
