Something tells me it is related to the green wire at Distributer.

I haven't identified what's causing my issues yet, but I did do a leakdown test and all the cylinders had about 4% leakage on a cold engine. So I don't think I have a major mechanical problem, which is a Yuge relief.

So it's either ignition, fuel, or a bit of both. My spark plugs were all fouled pretty badly too. So I replaced them after the leak down test.

Chris did hook me up with an old hpv-1 twin plug ignition system. I'm tempted to install that. Just have to reach out to Richard Clewitt about using a map sensor to pull timing unde boost. The instructions from electromotive don't have any information on that. And searching here I see people saying it's possible, but haven't seen any instructions on how to do it.

I've also made a lot of changes to the CIS system. So I'm sure the stock settings from the workshop manuals are not correct. After a quick email to Brian at rarly8 he instructed me to set it closer to euro spec.

Baby steps but a little progress. Thanks for the suggestions. I checked the green wire and the distributor for water.

To end on a good note I spent most of Hershey swap meet with Uwon and his beautiful backdated 78 with a turbo charged 3.4. He even let me take it for a short spin. I sold him the bare chassis 7 years ago. Absolutely beautiful car.

Well boyzzz,

I have some bad news for ya.

Looks like somewhere in this thread something went wrong, and you idiots didn't catch it.

The ticking noise I've had since rebuilding the engine (covered a page or two back) has had me so concerned my car has remained largely undriven. I barely have 500 miles on the engine rebuild. Which is now almost 3 years old.

I tried setting my valves tighter than I thought, looser, and exactly right. But never succeeded in getting rid of the noise.

Recently I said F'it and just tore the engine apart. Nothing is hitting me over the head indicating the root cause of the problem. There are obvious signs of major problems, but I can't figure out THE MAJOR PROBLEM that caused the signs. I'm still not sure where I went wrong. Working on diagnosing it over on the engine rebuild forum in the thread Disaster Strikes; What went wrong

I'm wondering if the bearing shuffling wear I had on the backside of my bearings could have something to do with my ongoing problems.

Anyway if you have some thoughts or ideas, I'd love to hear them here or over in the engine build forum. The turbo forum is more of a brotherhood than this rest of this place, so I just wanted to let you guys know where I stand on things.

Hopefully I'll be burning rubber soon. In the meantime get out and enjoy so 1 bar pulls for me.

Dayuuummnnn, Rich, just read through your thread in the Engine Building forum and really sorry to see that big ol' shiitslap you've recieved. Really sux to see all that damage but no smoking gun as to what could have caused it. But like that Neil dude said, no point in fretting about the past - forge ahead. And wow does that guy know his stuff, and is very articulate, too - really nice how he basically laid out a path like that.

Dang Rich...looked at your other thread, sorry to hear about the engine.

My full rebuild record is 1 and 1. 930 seemed to go well, while my 911 race engine rebuild melted down shortly after lift off. I didn't have the heart to try again, and sent it to Dawe's.

Tool loan program is available for you should you need...you were the last to use most of my 911 specialty tools.

Also, I heard that Verdon Tool had shut down, or was shutting down...one of the partners retiring?

Good luck.

Thanks Ron, I'm bummed I'm not driving the car and I really wish I knew where I screwed up but overall I'm taking this one in stride as a learning process.

Jacob - Thank you. Yes I'd like to hit up the tool loan program again. I'll owe you big time. I'll try and get some goods out of my brother-in-law again to restock the bourbon/scotch cabinet

That is sad news about Verden tool. I was really tempted to ask them if they'd be interested in training me to do machine work. I wouldn't mind getting into that business. Though right now with my track record I'm afraid I shouldn't be allowed within a country mile of a milling machine and the head of anything more than a push mower

Hey Rich, UGH, what an ordeal...so sorry to see those pics. I swore in four languages when I first looked at them. Onwards and upwards, I’ll be following your progress closely. I’ll check what Porsche tools I have left and send you an email.
Regards,
Johan
