Rick's engine rebuild starts in Cleveland

My son and I started this morning and had the engine on the floor in six hours. It went very smooth and without any problems.

Now the fun begins.

Rick that is very cool.

Except you forgot one thing...... The required picture of you standing up in the engine compartment.

Good luck and keep posting onthe progress.

Nice wheels of mine you've got there. How do you like them?

Good luck with the rebuild. What's the gameplan?

Hi Kevin,

The wheels and tires have been great. As far as the engine goes, I purchased a stage 2 turbo setup and I am pulling the engine down just to check it out.

Have a great New Year.

so here's a little addition to this thread for everyone. I started this project with my dad and have been keeping a thread going over on the golfmkv.com forum I'm on. So I figured I'd just copy it over here and let the real porsce guys take a look.

Enjoy : )

The Basics:
1985 Porsche 911 Targa
3.2 Flat 6
~215 HP before project
After turbo install we should be around 400 crank HP on a conservative tune.

Picture of the car before we started

Pictures of the GT30r kit...

Engine is out.

Exhaust and other components off.

Engine is on stand. Everything came apart smoothly.

Cam towers removed.

Case after towers are removed.

Pistons, cylinders and heads removed.

We ran out of time on Sunday and this is where we're at right now. Next is to to pull the head studs and split the case. The plan is to send the cylinders, heads, pistons, and rods to get checked out so we won't have any big problems after we get it all back in. Head studs and valves & springs are being replaced as well. In summary, this breakdown has gone pretty flawlessly. Save for one bolt we had to burn off the testpipe, everything came apart nicely. I'll try and take pictures of the rest of the breakdown and also when we start to put it all back together which I hope shouldn't be too long.

Cheers!

UPDATE:

Split the case. Packaged up rods, cylinders, and pistons. Pretty much done, except for replacing head studs and cleaning everything up a bit, for about 3 weeks until we get everything back...then the fun begins. Here some pictures of the internal disassembly...

Rick I see you left the crank pulley on. It takes a lot of torque to remove the bolt.

Good luck!

The crank pulley was already loose, just there for protection.

Thanks,

where are you sending all of the parts for checking, cleaning, mod'ing... any idea on the price to do this work?
May I also ask how much for the turbo set up?

Looks like a great project!!
Thanks for the info and post!

Bob,

I am sending cylinders, pistons, rods, and heads to Competition Engineering in California. Not sure on pricing yet although I probably could have left the engine together and been alright.

The turbo setup cost me about $6k but I am having some problems getting the muffler and some intake parts from the seller.

Thanks

I hope CE gets it back to you in a timely fashion. It took Jim Richards' parts quite a long time to get back to him. Granted, his was a 2.7 RS build. But nonetheless we're talking something like 6 mos. I believe for Jim's stuff.... That's a long time.

I used CE for the heads on my '88. They (Walt) were very timely and kept me well updated on the progress. Mine was pretty straightforward though.

Hey guys, just started engine assembly today. We were able to get the engine case back together and everything torqued down. We're hoping to get this car back on the road this spring/summer. Having it in the garage for almost 2 years now is really killing my dad and I.

Here's some pictures of what took place today...
