A 3.2 SS with stock rods and ARP / Raceware bolts will go 7200 all day. Most street-able cams won't pull that. And it's really not a short stroke, it's a bored out stock stroke. 911s are so over square already, other than the added displacement, I really don't know why people pay for new cylinders when a 3.0 will run with a 3.2 SS given it's built the same way.
You'll see about 240 RWHP from this motor, up about 5 from a3.0 built the same way. |
I had to get new P&C's anyway, so it cost me relatively $0 to bump displacement even just a bit. No brainer in my opinion.

In that case you're right, no brainer. I see a lot of people with perfectly good Mahle cylinders who go buy new 98s just to have a 3.2. That makes no sense.

Whatever the case may be, std. 3.0L or 98mm 3.2L, it's a solid engine to build. 3.0L does give up some torque compared to the 98mm 3.2. But either one spins more freely, has better rods and a better crank than a 3.2L long stroke. The only thing a stock 3.2 (and the late '83 3.0L) has over the '78-'83 3.0L is the better case since no oil sump plate makes the case stiffer. That of course ignores injection type and the 3.2 Motronic wins that debate hands-down in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing how your engine performs. Mike got a fantastic number out of Gertvr's 3.0L build. So i'm sure he's got some tricks he can suggest for your milder 3.2 to wow us. |

Hey Greg! Think he sent me pictures of your headers as I was deciding on mine. They are like jewelry. I'm not ready for my motor yet, so maybe he'll put yours ahead of mine. I was due to dyno this week, but waiting on a few last minute odds and ends.

Very nice build. 299 is a darn fine number in my book 300. May I ask at what RPM? Again congrats on a nice build, should be a blast to drive.

Some final pictures from Mike. Everything is about done now. We still had the muffler to figure out, both which one and then how to connect it with the v-band flange on the headers. Ultimately decided to go with a new Dansk muffler, and I think Mike and his team did a great job figuring out how to mount it. Back on the dyno tomorrow for some final jetting with the muffler and then I think this one is in the books!!

Ignition question........
Since some of the PP engine gurus are on this thread, I have a question about ignition. What is the advantage/disadvantage of using a 12 plug distributor vs a crank fired system? I know that lots of performance modded Porsche engines use one variation or another distributor, but there are some good direct fire systems out there as well. And, with the direct fire units, there is a large range of adjustment available at the twist of a dial or thru programming. Also, the electronic systems don't have to have caps and rotors replaced from time to time. Your thoughts?

I can think of several reasons to use a distributor on a twin plug engine: a) race or other class rules require it, b) you like the "retro" look, c) you already have the distributor. Anything else?
On function, I think crank fire ECU fire or the like wins hands down. Nothing to get out of whack, less stuff to keep checking and replacing, and a whole lot easier to adjust once you get the hang of it. |
I can't speak with any authority, but I have heard that the signalling to the individual coils from the computer can sometimes be subject to electrical interference in the engine bay. Does this make any sense?
Plus that 12 pin distributor just looks fantastic... Nice looking build. And pretty good power numbers. Enjoy! |
Todd - the rear muffler - is that one of the pre 74 mufflers which has been modified ?

That is a Dansk '74 style muffler that was modified to fit the headers and utilize v-band clamps. I'll shoot you a pm on the headers.
