New member intro
Just wanted to introduce myself as a former forum visitor and new-to-me R11S owner turned member. A thank you first to everyone here for the many answers and valuable tips over the years.
I recently returned to the fold with a low mileage 01 SA after many years with Italian brands. I actually had a factory ordered 11S, no ABS, Sport Package, back in the day, but an early highside ended the relationship quickly. 20 years on, and a different continent, I have decided to give it another go. As I will be making the obligatory personal changes and tuning now, I will most likely show up again for some top shelf advice.

Nice looking bike! It's a little quiet around here these days, but the experts will jump in if you have any issues.

The search function should still turn up some gems from the past.

Nice looking R1100s. Actually these bikes look good in every colour that I have seen. What Italian bikes were you riding?

Welcome back, CA Rider. For tuning, the way to go is with a custom chip from John Gemi. He'll be able to provide something to compliment that aftermarket exhaust. You can find him on FB.

Congrads on the bike . I had mine out yesterday . 2 up through the twisty roads around here . was loving it so much . had thought about selling it a few years ago , but its such fun to ride in the corners . and comfy for the missis on the back .
hope you enjoy riding and not wrenching ..... you may miss all the work you had to put into the italians .

Sorry about the late reply, I didn't have the notifications set up. I started with a 916 and worked my way through Ducati, Aprilia and Moto Morini. They all worked well in the Alps, but around here I thought a beemer might fit better. So far, so good.
For the record, after many R's and K's, every BMW spent more time (and money) in the service center than any Italian. Just my experience. I won't even mention Mini's. |

The extra time and money for BMW service I can believe. I installed a new clutch on the R1100s last year, could probably rebuild an entire Ducati engine in the same time, LOL. Did you own a 1098 by any chance? Have been considering one for a while, keep talking myself out of it though.

I only made it to 999. I did rent a Streetfighter (S) once, I remember deciding it was way too fast for the street. My SuperDuke lost all its hooligan credibility in a day... if that helps.

How comfortable was the 999 compared to the R1100s for street riding? Just trying to figure out if the 1098 is really a possibility as something that could be ridden for a couple hrs or is it just a torture rack. The new Streetfighter V4 are up over 200hp, likely enough for street riding.

The 999 was considered the most comfortable of the Ducati Superbikes, but not really comparable to a boxer, they are pure corner maschines and work well when you push them. The Streetfighter S I rode was very capable on the road, but like the SuperDuke is an on/off sort of ride. Acceleration is breathtaking, braking impressive, everything in between not so. Town or touring is just not in the equation.
I rode 30 years in the Alps, where bikes like these are worth the effort. But getting to the twisties was always a bit of a pain, even when I was a bit tougher. Hope that helps... |

The 990, worked very well in the Swiss Alps, tight corners, short straights.
Are you around Vancouver? As kids we used to take the airheads (S/RS) on B roads up for coffee and back on Sunday afternoons. |

The 990 SD would be lots of fun, do like the 1290 SD R but the GT would likely be a better ride. Vancouver is about 40miles away with lots of salt water in between. Was there last week and not sure I want to ride through Vancouver on a bike, did see some bikes on the road though, still way too cold up here. I hope your starting point was closer than socal.

One of Ducati dealers tried to dissuade me from a SF because it a model known for high attrition rate due to too much power. Sold MV Brutale 1090RR to make room for a 1098 SFS. The man was right, it’s a monster. |

@908/930 Sorry, I left out the detail that I grew up around Seattle.
@Tirefriar Yes, I fell victim to the 916 (Senna) back in the day, that lead to a long line of V2's. The last was the MM Corsaro (1200), it would have been a keeper, until a Renault Espace oversaw those lovely dual headlights... I only had the SF S for a weekend in the Alps, it is an absolute miracle that I survived that trip, the power curve was simply intoxicating. Rubber side down, as they say. |
