If track is on hand, this one works well............
I also have this one here at the shop if track time is the thing that needs to be done. This is a ready to race and WIN WERA bike. Serious insides......but not as serious as the first one I sent. Thoughts?

So true Bill. I hope I can keep riding and will always remember the nice run we had with a few other guys a few N. Ga. rallies ago.
I do live in the tomorrow when I am on the HP2..........but as I have continued to age, I every once in a while just want to ride slow, alone, far away, and remember the way it was. Not productive.......but still......something gets fed. I can get a 1000RR at anytime.......but will that take me forward to pleasure and learning experiences as the roads and path to knowledge unfolds........or just get me hurt? Choices are hard. At one time I was schizophrenic, but we're OK now. |

I thought about re-buying my R90/6 at one time. The new owner did me a favor, since he had not washed it in the 6 years he had owned it. I could see all the little seeps, leaks and problems I would have to fix to get it back where it was before I sold it. Pretty much ruined my desire to have it back.
Good luck, what ever you decide.

Well i had to smile when i read this thread, because i've had similar thoughts but i'll digress 30 odd years.
Early seventies i was a kid in sweat shop,H1a/H2c/CB750/BSA Rocket 3/Trident/CB750,I had the first 3,and BMW were trotting this junk out!!!!!,as i was in my twenties as were all my friends we just laughed, sure BM tried a little harder and brought the R90s out,but the world was passing e'm by(literally) at a great rate of knots,Pridmore did his best at Daytona, but just swimming against the tide. Fast forward 2010,i find them quite appealing now as an old man, have even seen an R90s with Lester wheels recently, and the chrome tank torpedo exhaust models fetch big bucks over here,as the interest rate is zilch and more folk are putting money in classics, assuming you've got any ![]() |

We can have a soft spot for the old stuff but there is noway that I would want to ride or even drive something from 30, 20 years back. There crap compared with todays rides. But with that said if it is eye candy for you then away you go! |

I was seriously considering bidding on a 65/5 on ebay a couple of months ago. I grew up collecting BMW cards and posters and still have a nostalgic attachement to them. I had visions of turning a clapped out machine inot a modernish cafe racer but soon realised that I don't have the time to spend fixing up an old bike let alone enough time to ride my 1100 as much as I would like too. Common sense has prevailed for me at this point in time but I still love the idea. If you have the cash and time I'd say it was a good investment.

...I have an opprortunity pending where I can pick up a '78 R100S for under $1500 that runs.
Needs a lot of TLC but could be a base to start wiith. I've been looking at monoshocks but never owned one. Hmmm... ![]()

Couple of observations about that one.
First, it appears to have the original flat sided chambers which are interesting because they were the first type but I'd be motivated not to use them since the fracture quite easily as the expand and contract. Second, this bike appears to somewhat of a hodge-podge of parts. To me it's a red flag that he's had the bike for 20 years and never got it running. ![]()

I've had /5, /6 and /7. They were neat. But they were mass-production bikes. I prefer a well restored R69 or even 60/2. By comparison, a hand-built, more personable machine. Lighter, lumpier cam, throatier exhaust. Starting procedure and smooth ride is pure vintage. Yet maintenance-friendly and extremely reliable. Great for old guys!
![]() Below are picks of my old '58 R69. Note the /3 bars and exquisite Hella mirror/aux lights (previous owner paid $3K for them!). Sorry for the poor photo quality, the pics are out of a 2003 edition of BMW Motorcycles Buyer's Guide. ![]() ![]() I had a '68 R69S also, but they have new owners now. Almost got my hands on an unrestored /3 back in 2004. But the owner got weird and backed away. I was disappointed. It really looked neat; almost cruiser-like. Now, don't get me started on my old Britbike days... |

Nice photos JP. The 1967 R69S I built up in the seventies, and later sold to Emerson Motor Work in Vermont, was very nice and fast. Once it was finished we were able to get it to run and hold 117 mph.........which is really running for one of those old bikes. They offered it for sale at a undisclosed price and eventually it sold. I ran low bars and 6volt aircraft landing lights mounted close in at tank height. Great days but simply could not get the bike to stop very well. Its stopping distance from 60mph was over 165 feet. The /5 units and their /6 and /7 brothers stopped quicker and were much faster..............but like you say..........NEVER had the sheer class act appeal that the older units have.
