Trying to figure out replacement grips for my 2004 R1100S
Hello!
I bought some ProGrip 719's and didn't check first to realize I needed 2 sets. ha ha Anyway, issue is that on a lot of the diagrams and tutorials I've seen, it looks easy to change out.. However... on my bike.. the end of the handlebar has a plastic tip on it.. I don't know how I'm supposed to get the new grips to slide on over that. The ProGrip 719 (large one) still wouldn't fit over it. Suggestions anyone? |

There are two screws near your switches, one is visible in your pics. Remove those, and the grip plus plastic tube should slide off. On my bike I did not need two sets of grips, I just did not re-use that plastic piece but put the grip directly on the metal bar.

But.. they are heated grips and I still want them. There are wires attached to the heated part so if I unscrew them won't the wire still be there? The far end plastic tab would still make it hard to get a grip over it!

HeartofDavid :
I also have a 2004 R1100S with heated grips. The photo shows a worn "Original Grip Buddies" over a stock grip. I do not have any plastic part. Maybe you could un-screw the bar end weight to remove the plastic part and then put the plastic part back afterwards. ![]() My photo almost looks like the one at "Original Grip Buddies" - Welcome

Check around here there are posts on changing out grips on the heated ones. Not a big deal really, just don't cut the heating element. Changed out a couple sets on mine with no problems. Throw away whatever that plastic piece is, never had it on mine. BBY sells replacement grips for our bikes that mimic the oe ones.

You can cut the old ones off but be very careful, the heating circuitry is just under the rubber.
I used a pair of pliers to gently pull on the rubber and used a razor blade to make a cut. They came off easily, sprayed hairspray down each of the new grips and quickly slide each one on. |

As everyone else has said, it's pretty easy to cut off the old grips and slide the new grips on, just be careful not to cut the heated elements as you do so. A "lift and cut" system works well to prevent cutting into the heater elements.
I went with pro-grips as others on this board had recommended. You lose a bit of heat from the heaters, but also gain a lot of comfort and lose a lot of vibration in the process. A very worth while trade off that I'm reminded of everytime i ride. Be sure to order two "right grips" though, so they fit over the heating element. Sorry, I misunderstood. My bike didn't come with heated grips so I didn't understand the nuances. Good luck!

Ok... I'm still lost. The pictures I posted are of my bars with the GRIPS taken off already. As you can see.. it's this plastic tube thing that has wires imbedded in the plastic. I just don't understand how to get the new grip over that plastic piece on the end of the bar. It's all attached and there are wires at the end of it. It's weird because I've not seen any other r1100s with the heated grips like this.

I didn't realize the grips were off until I looked again. It's totally different than mine, not sure if it's stock for that year or aftermarket. Does it work off the left control pods 2 temp switch? I'd remove the sleeve & see if I couldn't modify the wiring & cut off the flange to install regular grips. Either that or find something super stretchy that could be coaxed over that flange & leave the heating element alone.

I guess if you can't feed the new grip from the bar end side toward the middle, you'll have to feed the grip from the middle toward the bar end.
This does not look easy. You're going to have to find the electrical connector, loosen the grip from the control pods and then feed the wire thru the new grip .

I could just try to get some of those Grip Buddies and wrap over... Would that work? Anyone have any experience with those? |

Yep, right side, my bad. Interesting, wiring plugs on the grip element, way simpler to remove than mine.

Compressed air.. a blow gun tip slid around the inside perimeter of the grip will cause it to expand. You should be able to get them over that ridge.. I have done it many times on various bikes that have ridges on the plastic tube.
