Mr. Ballin,
Instead of beating up on Mr. Navarro, perhaps you should go knock on your local Porsche dealer's door and ask what remedy they have for their poorly designed IMS bearing? They'll gladly pick your pocket for another part which likely isn't any better than the original. I'm sure they'll also be glad to sell you a remanufactured engine if yours were to grenade. We live in a free enterprise system; Mr. Navarro has no obligation to give his products away...Porsche certainly has not.

What have you contributed...

I know Charles has made at least 2 changes in the last week to his IMS web page in response to some suggestions I sent him for areas that I didn't feel were as clear as they could be. Many of us strive for the truth as we see it and clarity in explaining our facts or opinions. I know Charles does. Have you documented any problems on your web page? Have you researched any actual costs? Have you talked to about a thousand people either by email or voice patiently answering their questions? Have you devoted your car to be a rolling research vehicle? Your wife's? Have you journeyed thousands of miles to work with others on a part and its installation techniques? Have you dyno'ed the results? How many times? Tracked the results? AX'ed it? How many times? Developed 4 different approaches depending on what version of the M96 engine you find? Have you built an installer network and supported them with training, documentation, video guides, shipping, warranty, etc? Ever monitor the health of every engine your part is installed in? Ever been inside a M96 engine? Installed how many of your parts? What kind of installation tools do you sell? Rent? What kind of workshop do you have? Office space? Clerical help? Inventory? Web site? How do you pay for all that? When you have your product...charge what you want to. By then you'll understand that Charles probably makes minimum wage on all the effort he has put in. |

Do-It-Yourself IMS upgrade
I hope it's OK to post a link to a Rennlist forum here. Although this comes from the 996 forum, much of it must apply to Boxsters also--correct me if I'm wrong.
I read this thread from beginning to end last night and found it fascinating. The thread's author, Kyle aka "Shark Attack" on Rennlist, replaced his IMS in his garage using basic tools, a lot of persistence, ingenuity and some help from Jake Raby. He ALSO replaced his RMS with a $7 home-made alignment tool that he made. Put in a new clutch while he was in there too! I'm Going in ALONE....LNE Retrofit bearing - Rennlist Discussion Forums I don't think *I* could do this, but it's nice to know that it can be done. I'm sure Wayne's book will have a detailed method for doing this on Boxsters.

There's some slight problems with the info in that thread. I came up with a method to lock the intermediate shaft in place without having to use the camshaft timing tools. I will be documenting this in the tech article coming soon. If you don't take caution with the cam timing, you can ruin your engine. Particularly with the 3-chain motor cars.

Charles, thanks for all your efforts on this. Given the little I know about all the development that went into this, $600 seems more than fair right now. Last edited by mts; 02-24-2010 at 01:06 PM.. |

My local dealer recommends the IMS Retrofit.
Caveat: I am on Charles vender list and all of my engine
rebuilds have the IMS Retrofit installed. A couple months back I was talking to the local Porsche dealerships head mechanic. It was the first time I had talked to him and we were talking about the M96 engine rebuilds that I was doing. He told me to check out those "IMS Retrofits some guy in California is selling -- we've done several and highly recommend them". I told him I knew about the IMSRs, used them, and that Charles was actually out of Illinois :-) He was very complementary on the quality of the kit and the ease of installing. So YMMV when you approach your dealership. cheers, Mike |
