Tiptronic "flaring"
Cayman S 2006 Tiptronic
My Cayman has this thing where sometimes it seems like someone is playing with the clutch - cruising at roughly the same speed the revs go up a couple hundred revs then settle back. Porsche dealership says this is called "flaring" and isn't serious. I've had the transmission serviced (fluid + filter) but no change at all. Anyone know of the most cost effective way to stop this from happening? |

I have an '03 Boxster S, Tiptronic, and I can say that I've never seen this in my car. Does it change gears when this happens?

Is this transmission "slipping" sounds like it to me?

It does not change gears when this happens. It is almost as if I'm stepping on the clutch a little - same effect. Revs go up and go down within a few seconds - a few hundred RPM.

Don't know what to tell you. As I said, my 03 Tip has never done that. A few times when I've been driving on very slippery roads (think ice storm) with my wheels spinning madly the ABS light has come on, it seems to have gotten confused. Power cycling cleared that up.
Sure sounds like the trans is slipping. You may want to try other forums with more traffic. 986forum.com is a place to start, and Pelican owns it now CB |

Owned a '99 TIP and an '01S TIP.
Never happened. I can recall maybe two times the TIP got "confused" but both times I had quickly changed my mind in mid action and it merely got into the wrong gear but within 100 feet it had righted itself and never again.
The TIP is a ZF transmission and is like the same used on other cars. It may sound like heresy but take it to a transmission repair place like AAMCO and see what they think. Even if you don't use them you may learn something. To most dealers, the TIP box is a mystery that they farm out. |
