Shipping wheels into Canada?!?

I recently purchased some used wheels for my 993tt and need some help or suggestions regarding shipping from the US. I am not trying to be cheap but I would like to avoid as much extra taxes and/or duty as possible. They are Gemballa wheels so I can't avoid duty because of manufacturing location. I flat out refuse to use UPS. I have used USPS for all my other shipments and wonder if this is a good option for wheels?(low brokerage fee and could maybe declare wheels as gift or lower the value for duty?). Picking the wheels up at the border is also not an option (to far). Use another courier? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

You shouldn't be paying duty anyways...they are car parts.

If you live close to the border, have them shipped to a UPS Store for customer pick-up and then clear them yourself through customs.

You can pick your own shipping company...it doesn't have to be UPS to ship to a UPS Store. Plus shipping within the US is much cheaper.

Hi Kevin,

Whereabouts do you live in BC?

What I do (and a lot of people in Vancouver) will have their items shipped to Blaine (Blaine Enterprises is one of them) or to Point Roberts (various options.) You pay a fee when you pick up the items and then declare them yourself at the border with Customs Canada. I have been doing this for several years as it has saved me over thousands than buying from our stealerships in Vancouver.

I would guess your only other option would be to ship via Greyhound and to pick them up at a bus depot.

Really? I thought this only applied to motorcycles and related accessories? Please do enlighten!

If you are not near the border USPS is the way to go. But you won't be able to avoid the taxes. And undervaluing them may seem like a good way to pay less tax but you will want to insure them for what they are worth and it can't work both ways.

I thought duty-free only applied to products manufactured in Canada, US, and Mexico.

Right now I am in Revelstoke so going to the border is a little out of the way.

Let me rephrase that.... not cheap but frugal . I would like to save some money if possible to go towards refinishing the wheels.

Not in the case of car/motorcycle parts and accessories.

I buy BMW, Honda and Porsche parts from the US all the time...no duty...just PST and GST...or HST now.

As for tires, if they are not US made there is 6.1% duty.

Actually, you are right.

I checked all my CBSA receipts and only GST/PST (at the time) and HST was charged.

Kevin

I thing you know it buy now, but I've been getting stuff in the US for the last 2 years. I never paid any Duty, even on stuff from P.P. originating for Porsche.

Of course I did not write down on my papers that it was made in Germany and they don't ask.

So you only pay GST/PST or HST if you live in some Province like Ontario where the &*^%$#+ Premier introduce it without being part of his platform. Actually, the "little caca", broke over 50 "election promises" in his first week...

Back to the bad road; Under declaring stuff use to be easy... Now if you have not been to a crossing lately, they are all equip with computer. If you pretend that you lost your receipt but think you paid $35 for the tire, they will look it up.

You get on their bad side and you guess it, you are now red flagged for life.

You already saving 50% on the price by getting it there, be happy and pay the full tax because it's not worth the trouble when one get caught.

If you can not get the stuff yourself USPS is the best way as you not get slap with unbelievable brokerage fee like UPS charge

P.S. If this was not your intention in the first place (under declaring)... sorry but my spiel is now consider Public Announcement for the good of all

In fact, the tax savings on what I saved in the first place alone pays for my gas and bridge crossing into the US a couple of times over, so why bother complaining.

What it boils down to is, would you like to pay 13% of $1000 or 13% of $500 in taxes. The tax savings in that example are $65 which more than covers my $20 in gas and $6 for bridge tolls. I'm still waaayyyyyy ahead.

My savings have been 43%. I keep an Excel spreadsheet of my expenditures.

I go to Ogdensburg about 6 time a month, my record was 3 time in the same week... Ask the US border agent if the had a Frequent Cross Border Point Program

On the way back I'm glad to pay my 13% on half price stuff. Also It pay for my Navy pension...

For the last 2 years, the gas at Sunoco has been steady at 75 cents a liter, so for my van fill-up, I save over $15 so like you said it pay for the trip.

They are a bit stingy at the Ogdensburg crossing, we were wave off a couple time when it was under $90. But at the Niagara Fall crossing we got wave all the time, once we had told them $450... Too busy I guess.

Except for day to day shopping, I'm done with shopping in Canada. Over price and they have no clue about Customer Service, so *&^%#@ them...

I'll agree to that.

Why should I pay $250 for a control arm for my E30 BMW when it costs $110 with taxes, shipping and currency converted here on Pelican Parts? Plus, it's my excuse to get cheap gas and a Sourdough Jack at Jack In the Box.

Thats exactly how I feel. Money talks, BS walks!!!

The second best part about shopping in the US is how it upsets so may patriotic types with their heads buried in the sand. Mention where you shop on car or motorcycle forums and get ready for abuse from these a-holes. I always give those complainers the opportunity to make up the dollar difference for me to shop up here, but they never take me up on that offer...dumb f--cks that they are.

Do you have a referance number or something that will prove I shouldn't pay duty on the wheels because some other people told me i will, I even called a border agent and she said I would. I know with border agents is that ask 10 different agents get 10 different answers.

If you mean Kal tire, I buy from them too. My girlfriend works in the head office in Vernon so I get some pretty good deals.

Even with a reference number, if some CBSA official says it is what it is, then it is what it is, even if they are wrong.

Call their 800 number and speak to someone.

Well you'd love the clown from Manitoba on eBay selling the 8 volume 993 factory repair manuals...get this...for US$699.99. I just bought a new set for US$395.00 from Pelican.

Then he is selling a tool kit for...US$699.

Everybody has a right to dream, I guess.

Do not use UPS, they both Suck and Blow. I had wheels shipped twice now for my pepper out of California, and both times used FedEx, no issue, no damage.

Another option is USPS, I'm not sure if they ship something this big?

Anyway both my shipping, the sellers arranged and paid for it, I just had to pay the CDN Government stuff. Still with the low prices I came out really ahead.
