I put Dunstalls on my 900cc Triple, they sounded great.

Thanks for the head's up on the forks!!
I'm focused on getting to a trustworthy and safe state of being.
Oh, wait... it's a 48 year old Bonneville with a 53 year old motor.
They don't like that state

This one makes a more spectacular use of pure gas to emit a rat rod-ish series of small backfires punctuated with a louder one, still in the early stages of tuning, burbles are a goal.
My local expert tells me to advance the timing beyond specs of 38 BTDC to 40-42 at full advance.
Just short of it kicking you back he says.
Hmmmm. I got kicked very hard by a Yamaha 360 2 stroke years ago due to a broken woodruff key. I didn't like it.

I did try stuffing some steel wool in the inlet side of the baffles, it made little to no difference in sound levels, more might.

Question for the brain trust....my '81 XT 250 runs very weakly. We've taken the engine completely apart and put in new piston rings and clean and tuned the carb as well as adjusted the timing and still very low power.

Only thing left is to look at the exhaust.

What do you think? Before I do this what do you think the likely hood is that this is the culprit?

When I remove the exhaust....just look for something that's plugging it? There is no spark arrestor at the end and it feels like the exhaust is coming out pretty good right now but that probably doesn't mean anything empirically.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I always start with the basics - recheck the valve clearances. Set the timing again. Check the plug gap. The basics. Then I go back through the carb, especially paying attention to the jets and their cleanliness. Finally, do a compression check - you might have slipped up fitting the new rings. If it starts up easily, revs cleanly then you might need to look at things like a slipping clutch. Good luck.

Clogged air filter, Camshaft timing, and worn cam lobes would be the first things I would look at.

Bought this 1st gen. Multistrada a few months ago.

Absolutely love it and they're dirt cheap right now. It's not enough of a dual sport for the wannabe adventurer crowd and not enough of a street racer for the wannabe Rossi crowd so it's stuck in a weird middle zone. The bike eats highway miles and feels like a SuMo in the twisties.

I love ADV...it’s my go-to forum after Pelican. Baz, you may want to check petcock screen for tank debris that could be choking off fuel supply under load.

Thanks for all the input guys.....we just tore everything down and put it all back together and the only thing we didn't check was the exhaust. It had some power issues before our rebuild, which is why I was asking. Will go back and double check. Thanks again!

It's not mine.
A friend of mine made it.
It began as an Orcal 125.

Top speed is about 60.
Sounds really nice, you would't know it's only a 125 if you hear it.
Cheap too, bike cost about 2000 USD new, another 1000 for pieces and labor.
