Welcome to Mexico - $4/Gallon
In Houston I was paying $1.85/gallon for regular. On the drive over, in West Texas, it edged up to $2.35 and then $2.79, near the border.
In Mexico, it is 18.75 pesos/l = $3.75/gallon.

Now I know. |

Still cheaper than California
Transportation costs for ETC and Enterprise pipelines to connect to PEMEX plus the Government's fancy cut and voila $3.75 per gallon.

Diesel has been around $4 a gallon at cheap places for a year or so. Now, as luck would have it, the station 3 blocks away has the cheapest in town @ $3.45 as of yesterday but other stations are still over $4. Diesel prices drop $1 a gallon when you leave CA. these days. That is expensive in Mexico. Where are you down there?

Diesel has been very slow to drop in price relative to gas this time around. $2.69 in FL now. I'm happy with anything under $3.

I paid under $3/gallon at an ARCO station last week in Anaheim. La Palma and Kramer/Glassell.
That station typically has the lowest price around these parts. Sometimes Sams club is cheaper, sometimes not. I just checked gas buddy, that ARCO station is still at $2.99/gallon. https://www.gasbuddy.com/Station/ARCO/CA/Anaheim/20698 Ironically, there is a shell station across the intersection from that ARCO station and the shell station is charging $3.59/gallon. Both stations are owned by the same company and are selling the same gas from the same tanks at the same refinery. 60 cents difference because of brand recognition. And people are still willing to go to the shell station because YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Last edited by sammyg2; 12-26-2018 at 08:27 AM.. |

Shell's give a grocery discount, Krogers, some of the main stores. I don't think it offsets their high price though.

Yep. Diesel is $4.19 a gallon @ both Chevron stations on the corner of Beverly Blvd. and LaBrea, $3.45 and dropping @ Mobil station on corner of Olympic and Western, which is always a loss-leader station.
It's interesting to me to see two such different business models at work. They obviously both pay the same for the fuel but one decides to give it away for candy bar and bottled water sales(?) inside the store and the other decides that they will sell less fuel but make more on it. Or something like that. There is a huge convenience factor in gas sales where they know that people will generally buy it in their own neighborhood, especially in the fancier parts of town. There are a couple of stations in Beverly Hills that have always been close to a dollar higher than anywhere else and they are always busy. Sure, their rent is higher but they also have full-service pumps, (very rare in CA.), where they tack on an extra 25 cents a gallon or something and people gladly pay it. I had a girlfriend years ago who lived in BH and was not exactly a price conscience consumer. She was filling up @ the full service island and I said, "do you know that this gas is a dollar a gallon more than down the street?" "Oh, really?" Some people don't even look at the price. Just pull into their neighborhood station and hand over a credit card. I'm obsessed w fuel prices, partly because I buy a lot and it's a major expense. But the odd thing is that I'll pick up a restaurant tab for a couple hundred bucks when I'm flush w/o batting an eye but drive to a different station to save 10 cents a gallon, every time.

Peso to dollar crash and the Mexican government can not afford to subsidize gas anymore.
US and Europe tax gas and use it as a revenue source. Big difference. |

There is a Shell station on Sunset and Wilton, next to the 101 freeway, that is a discount station. Another on Vermont near the 101. So it's not even a brand thing, it's a business strategy deal that stations choose. And yeah, some stations are a lot nicer places to fuel up than others, that's for sure. I hate crowded urban stations w small lots and will avoid certain ARCOs even if they are cheaper because of it.
I believe Sammy about the same fuel thing and have never had an issue w ARCO but I have gotten bad fuel a couple of times in life and it was a nightmare. About a year ago on motorcycle at a Sinclair station in East LA, needed gas and jumped off the freeway. I was so surprised to see a Sinclair, (rare in SoCal), my bike started running awful @ 80 mph 10 minutes later. I had to limp it home and drain the tank and fill w fresh gas. If it was a car, it would have been a big problemo.

Here locally, almost all the Shell station have been shut down. A local company called OnCue is taking over. They have large well stocked convenience stores, and I suspect very competitive prices. I have never bought their gas and only some beer on a few special occasions that are irrelevant. They spend a LOT of money to acquire prime lots, and build fancy new stores. They must be doing something right, every one is always busy. That is a good reason for me to avoid it.
I buy my 100% corn free gas from a Conoco close by. They have a small store, but nice guys own it. They will special order me Erdinger Dunkel, the worlds best beer in my opinion. Anyway, I pay 20 to 25 cents more per gallon since it does not have the federal subsidy. They have gasohol for sale if I wanted it. The only time I used that was for a rental car I was returning.

We'll be relocating just south of Jax, to Saint Augustine in a few months. Looking forward to those gas prices!
