them Marketing folks must have had very pure Columbian Sunshine to get that high that they could connect that square hunk of junk to anything as agile and fast as a Cougar cat.

Thought I'd drop this in here as it seemed the best place, released just in time for putting under the Christmas tree. Already ordered mine

Not met the author https://www.calum-douglas.com/ but he's an ex-Mercedes F1 engineer so it should be an interesting accurate technical read

It's not really helpful to call that the impossible turn. When the **** hits the propeller a significant percentage of pilots are going to have the urge anyway, so better demo and train the exercise than treating it like the thing that should not be talked about. A prompt 180 with a good amount of bank (more than the example above) while allowing the nose to drop to keep speed usually sets you up for a easy reverse approach from 300-500ft, depending on the aircraft.

A lot depends on the altitude at the time of the failure.

I watched a guy in a Bonanza make it back safely at Mesa, AZ (Falcon Field). He made a left 270 and landed back on the intersecting taxiway.

Do catastrophic mechanical failures occur at a disproportionate rate in piston powered aircraft? I understand these machines/engines are running at WOT for a fair bit of time and that the engines are forever under load but it seems like this should be less of an issue than it is, Especially so considering the maintenance and inspection requirements of aircraft and that these engines run at relatively low RPM.

I liked being a private pilot but the engines (and a fire) make me twitchy.

Altitude, speed, wind, distance from the runway
once the engine fails.. every second the variables get much worse

The window of opportunity is VERY small.

Hence the recommendation to use ALL available runway for take off. even if you normally have the extra power to take off at 1/3rd.
Taking all of it could be the difference in altitude and speed if you run out of power just past the end of the runway.
