I had a dose of millennial reality when my 19 year old niece came out to the Coachella Festival. 3 days of bands I have never heard of. Lots of rap, techno and whatever it might be called.
I asked her if she ever listened to “classic rock”? Stare.
Asked her if she had heard Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon” Stare.
How about “Sgt Pepper” She said she had never heard of that group!
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys? Yeah I think I heard one song about surfing.
Asked her a few more and gave up.

I found this to be incredibly sad.

Give her a six pack of water, a blanket. a phone charger, and a bucket.
Point her to her room.

(Talk about it later.)

I don't understand how someone's taste in music can be considered sad.

I'm way older than millennials, have heard of, and heard, all the groups you listed but do not listen to them by choice as I don't find that type of music appealing (I do not like classic rock, for the most part, though I have heard plenty of it, and certainly do not like Beach Boys type stuff). I am a longtime metalhead that loves the new as well as the old. Is that sad, too?

Well you missed the point of my comment. You seem to miss the point of a lot of comments.

To develop a “taste” in music one needs to be exposed to different types of music.
It was sad because she has never even heard any music from any era other than the current stuff.

I think it would be great to turn her on to some of the greatest music ever.

That's a great point. My son (just turned 50) has become a fan of 1920s jazz, after going through a period of reggae and 50s jazz (Oscar Peterson, etc). He often challenges me with a new artist he's found.

That's good stuff. I wouldn't pop it in for a spirited ride in the Porsche, but under certain circumstances, I'd love that. I wish my grandfather had been around long enough for me to appreciate it with him, but when I was born, he was already 60.

I'm a Boomer who had young parents. They exposed me to" their kind of music" while growing up, simply by playing the records. Big Bands, Swing, the Dorsey brothers, Glen Miller, etc. Additionally, they enjoyed "Race music" and played that as well. All of this I absorbed and came to appreciate. As I got older, my transition to Do-wop, Blues, and Rock and Roll was easy, as was the evolutionary changes in Rock itself, over the years. Still, like many, there is a particular style of music that I prefer, largely due to the memories they invoke and what my life was like at that time.

I did the same with my own children who are all now in their 30s and 40s. They know and appreciate music back to the Big Band era, grew up listening to (now) Classic Rock, and have moved to their own type of music but still retain the knowledge and appreciation of earlier popular music.

Another Boomer here. Dad was an Air Force pilot flying cargo aircraft. They often flew a load of whatever to Japan, and came home to Hawaii mostly empty. It was no big deal to bring home a stereo and speakers right from Japan to Hawaii. Dad had a reel to reel tape recorder, and made Mix tapes for the house. Some were for parties, some were for just being home. I listened to all those songs they loved.

Dad loved Peggy Lee, and the trombone music. I grew up when the Stones, Beatles, and all the other great classic rock and roll. How could I not like it? I never cared for Country music that was popular with my older brother.

Now days at stores I hear the music they play. I have no idea what it is even called as a style or genera. Lots of women singers, repeating one phrase over and over and that is the entire song. No real difference from one "song" to the next. Whatever it is is way better than RAP. But that is just the opinion of another grumpy old white man.

I believe it isn't just about speed.

If it were just about speed a band of finger picking banjo players would be all he'd listen to.

If you were in the Chicago area, even as a millennial, the word, "clout" would be recognized.
