...DORIAN STILL BATTERING GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND...

This is a life-threatening situation. Residents on Grand Bahama
Island should not leave their shelter when the eye passes over, as
winds will rapidly increase on the other side of the eye. Residents
in the Abacos should continue to stay in their shelter until
conditions subside later today.

Hazards:
- Wind Gusts to 190 mph
- Storm Surge 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels with higher
destructive waves

These hazards will continue over Grand Bahama Island during most of
the day, causing extreme destruction on the island.

I thought you'd like to see the flood control system we have installed at the our hospital in Jax. We're directly on the St Johns River and 2 years ago during hurricane Irma we had millions of dollars of flood damage. During the last 2 years we've spent about $6 million on moving electrical switchgear to higher floors, elevating fuel tanks and installing this system of barrier walls.

The worst of our damage was in two building which are 2 and 3 blocks from the river. These were damaged by water entering the building through the walls at the bottom and at the windows. We could not seal the entire buildings with sand bags and the water seeped in.

The system shown here is made up of the vertical frames which are bolted to the ground and wall sections which are installed between verticals. Every piece is gasketed and locks together. As the water pressure increases the gaskets seal. These pics are of one of the buildings that is 3 blocks from the river. We got about 6" of water in about 95% of the first floor.

The crank handles on top of the walls compress the sections together and lock them all tight. We have this system on our 10' overhead doors at our loading dock. The loading dock is actually below grade so we have three separate systems of these walls protecting it.

This is a picture of a exit stair that empties ou on the river side of the hospital. This one is about 8' tall. That's the river you see thru the door glass.

Any building built in any area susceptible to flooding should be built on stilts, IMHO.

Use the bottom floor for parking only.

Everything else starts at the first floor - which gives you a default head start of 10-12' against storm surge/flooding.

Anything in the first floor "parking area" is mobile and can be re-located inland or to higher ground.

The fact that this isn't being done demonstrates how utterly ignorant we are as a society.

That is a really cool setup. I am digging the cross section too you can see how more pressure would make it seal up tighter. Brilliant design.


Tracking is still saying West track but rader shows it wobbling to the NNW now so I think the turn already started, of I hope. Which is good if it is actually turning already.

It has been a surprisingly nice day here so far, a few squall lines coming through which are crazy, its nice and sunny and breezy, actually beautiful out. Then 10 second later it is dark windy as hell and torrential rain coming down sideways, 30-60 seconds later, the sun comes back out.

I still have a few things to pull into garage and waiting to see if it actually gets bad. Plus watching tracking close.

Great news, the turn has begun!! Last update put the forward speed at 1 MPH still BUT it turned to WNW which I thought I saw in the radar loop. I figured it was my wishful thinking.

Scroll down here and look for the video posted in the social media section (right column about 1/3 down page) there is a video from Grand Bahama, guy riding out the storm in a stilt home 15' off the ground with impact windows. It is doing well but man, scary stuff, if it goes sideways he deals with over 7' deep water.

Other than sand bags in from in front of the shop & storage units, I'm prepared.
Most likely won't be doing river front broadcast or be able to go take pictures for you guys like the last few storms, as the Storm Chaser 2500 4X4 is in the paint shop, and I'm not willing to take the Pepper Wagon through the flood zones unless a complete emergency. Still nice out right now, everything strapped, wind is just now starting to pick up..

I hate that these storms stare at you for days, tease you with a drop in millibars. I have only experienced CAT 2 and low 3's. I simply can't imagine what a 5 lurking off shore must feel like.

Stupid, I know, but even though my place is out of the cone, got my gas and diesel tanks topped off, ran the generators, shifted power, went through the drills just a little bit with my wife to make sure.

My best to FLA, GA and SC. I do not feel good about this one.
