I expect that redbeard can tell you about inverter life

re: lottsa land - you have a LOT of rooftops and parking lots to use - that also reduces transmission losses and shades roofs from heat

NV solar is one to watch - IIRC Warren Buffet owns the co.

Just look at the history of reclaimed water rates in the west as an example.
Ideally you want a fossil or nuclear unit to run 24/7. What tears them up is shutting down and starting up. The first time I saw a 200,000 run-hour gas turbine in our shop I thought it was only a couple years old. I was so used to seeing units that ramp up and down everyday that were completely worn out.

quick start gas turbines - run 'em on bio-gas from CAFOs & landfills

BTW, the big turbines at the big dams can go from zero to full power in 10 minutes or less

Yeah it used to be the same with older electric motors (pump set ups). Soft starts back in the day were very expensive. Then we get digital controls and the world of electric pumps was vastly improved in so many ways. Slam starts and hydraulic controls became a thing of the past.

IMO he has wishful predictions or, is looking to get his name in the news so he can surf for funding.

Careful there Nick.

On pain medication with the head not right, you sound like a prime target for an email scam. Was it recommending anything ?

Why wishful thinking? Maybe he's trying to scare people - and for the same reason.

"OH MY GOD they're coming to take your Porsches and Ferraris! Fund my anti-EV campaign today!"

I said "wishful prediction".

Its a way to change the opinions of the uninformed public into thinking that EVs should be funded by the govt and they might as well buy one now (even if it isn't best for them) because eventually they will have to have one. This is a tactic used by the media to report only the facts that steer you to conclude what they want you to think.

WD: IMO, your logic of the writer being anti EV is rather lame. Don't be so quick to ramp up rhetoric and fight those who disagree with you.

Why don't electric cars have photo cells, etc.

Even the OP said, “A bit scary for us classic car guys.” Seems HE got the message.

Off the wall doom and gloom predictions are a waste of time and I ignore them.
Have a nice day.

That is application dependent. As a daily driver, I'll take my Tesla over any gas vehicle I've owned or do own.

application dependent?

Sure. Electric golf carts are another better... oh wait, a lot of people prefer gas even there too. (less hassle, more top end)

I don't mean to knock your cars, but I expect that Tesla is the most expensive car you've ever purchased too. What... ~80k? --That's one expensive appliance.

No, my 997 C2S was the most expensive new car I purchased.

My Tesla was $55,000, then I received a $1875 federal tax credit and my state cut me a check for $3500 for buying it, so less than $50,000 after all subsidies. Not bad for a 500 horsepower sedan that is capable of outrunning far more expensive sports cars. It's also fun as hell to drive.

Same here.

I would take a $50-100K Tesla over my beat up DD Accord.
