A friend of mine has one of these: https://www.intechrv.com/models/flyer/explore/
![]() I have borrowed it twice and I really like the ramp and ability take bikes and other stuff along. It is on the list.

bad Ass ^^^^^
i want one bad. i think i like the Turtleback, but that is only RTT option. i dont know how you get a dog up there, or me, when i am old. a sleep-inside model like the Off-the Grid models might be better for my uses.

If we are drifting into compact tow behind campers, I like these A frame rigs.
They are low profile when towing, yet have standup headroom and some extra space inside when set up. https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/camping-trailers/rockwood-hard-side-pop-up-campers#lg=1&slide=2 Cheers Richard |

The above A frames are Swiss Chalets in comparison to our Jode family rig. These type of threads wander in the best of ways...

This looks exactly like what I want next. A 3/4 or 1 ton with an Alaskan. I read earlier though that the Alaskan's have no aluminum frame?
The MC or a good bicycle will make packing unnecessary to go to town and get beer or whatever. G |

Devil’s advocate: in 5 minutes you could pitch a nice big tent with a lot more room, doesn’t move around when you walk in it, doesn’t weigh the truck down, don’t need to carry a MC, doesn’t cost much.
I do like that Alaskan though, no overhang, no jacks.

Sleeping on the ground sucks. I would do an elevated platform with a canvas tent. But that's essentially a trailer at that point.

Every camper/RV is a compromise . And folks have different needs/wants . There is no one size fits all and that's ok . For overall versatility a truck camper is a good compromise but they are not for everyone . Just like a 40' long 5th wheel is not for everyone .
A simple tent can be a great option until it rains 3 days straight ............ there is no joy sleeping on the ground and getting soaked . Or being 95 degrees out and humid I will be turning on the AC in my truck camper and sleep like a bear while you sweat like a pig in your canvas wrap 😁 . |

![]() Here's my rig the first day I bought it. Kind of over kill but I do tow with it. I'll be bugging out for the Appalachian Trail right after I go to the 4th of July IMSA race. Hopefully two months of cooler temperatures!!! |

i would think a root top tent would be 5 minutes, which is the charm of the thing.

Tents get wet, then mold when packed up Tents not allowed at many grizzly sites; and not a great idea when allowed in Griz country I spent 8*30*4 + 5*30*5 nights in tents in the alpine, sub-alpine and deserts as a grad. student. I now have better tents but only use them a few nights a year. Now, a Vanagon with a tent popup.... Last edited by RWebb; 06-15-2020 at 12:04 PM.. |

I have car camped for many years with a tent setup ... haha. It totally sucks. My family's excitement about going camping went up 1000% once we got the camper. That includes me.
You haul a lot of stuff car camping with a tent. It all has to come out and go back in. Stove, coolers, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, pillows, lamps etc. It felt like I am constantly loading and unloading crap. In a truck camper all is contained and I only throw in fresh food, fill up the water and I am ready to go. Previously tent camping, even with all camping gear in a pile and packing lists, it would always be a major effort to get ready for a trip, set up when there, tear down and then upon return stow it all again ready to go out again. Ok, you’ve convinced me to get a Vanagon camper. Hey look there’s one here!
