Looking west from Rt 22A over Lake Champlain, I think it was near Bridport, Vt.

My house is on the west shore of Beebe Pond..this looks sort of like the "Scream" painting..

Apparently the homeowner and town were at odds...Just off Rt22 , Hoosick Falls, NY, the house has since been painted a uniform color

My backyard (kind of) sunset at Jones Beach, NY. 4 miles from my place.

In 1898, the cruiser USS Charleston captured Guam. The island's garrison was unaware that there was a state of war between the US and Spain, so they mistook salvos from the Charleston as a salute from a visiting ship. When Spanish officials took a boat out to welcome the Charleston, they were shocked to learn that they had become PoWs

reports are that many at Gettysburg, did not use their rifle. and pretended to shoot.
And then reloaded again.
They found huge amounts of rifles after the battle loaded and many loaded twice or more

people don't necessarily want to kill in battle, but peer pressure and all that

Now obviously if such a rifle falls to the ground and then somebody who DOES use it runs into a double load..

https://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/almost-every-rifle-recovered-at-gettysburg-was-fully-loaded-and-no-one-knows-why/

There are similar reports of WW1 where soldiers fired their rifle but they didn't aim to hit.
Things changed a great deal by WW2

At Gettysburg museum they have a stunning, just mind blowing mural, called the Cyclorama. It is simply huge, and wonderfully well lit, and displayed.

https://www.nps.gov/gett/planyourvisit/cyclorama.htm

It is mind blowing large, and painted in the 1800s. It is just wonderful that it survived, and now is in the hands of the museum. Well worth the trip just to see it.

Now back to regular random pics.....

No matter who you are, or where you go, the bureaucrats have to have the paperwork.

The US $7.2 million check used to pay for Alaska, 1868, (roughly $135 million in 2022).
In 1866 the Russian government offered to sell the territory of Alaska to the United States. Secretary of State William H. Seward, enthusiastic about the prospects of American Expansion, negotiated the deal for the Americans. Edouard de Stoeckl, Russian minister to the United States, negotiated for the Russians. On March 30, 1867, the two parties agreed that the United States would pay Russia $7.2 million for the territory of Alaska. The check for $7.2 million was made payable to the Russian Minister to the United States Edouard de Stoeckl, who negotiated the deal for the Russians.
