Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller
He was a colorful veteran of the Korean War, four World War II campaigns and expeditionary service in China, Nicaragua and Haiti. He was one of the most decorated Marines in the Corps and the only Leatherneck ever to be awarded the Navy Cross 5 times for heroism and gallantry in action.

Chief Iron Tail, cranking an automobile, 1915.

June 22nd 1954 Heinemann's Rocket, The Bantam Bomber, The Tinker Toy, also known as the famed A-4 Skyhawk, first flew from Edwards Air Force Base, Californa. Deliveries to Navy and Marine Corps squadrons (to VA-72 and VMA-224 respectively) commenced in late 1956. The famous delta winged, single-engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later McDonnell Douglas.
A little known fact: The A-4 was designed to be capable in the event of a hydraulic failure, to land on the two drop tanks nearly always carried by these aircraft. Such landings resulted in only minor damage to the aircraft which could be returned to flight status in less than an hour.
The A-4 also pioneered the concept of "buddy" air-to-air refuelling. This allows the aircraft to supply others of the same type, eliminating the need for dedicated tanker aircraft—a particular advantage for small air arms or when operating in remote locations.
Skyhawks extremely long operational service played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. Fifty years after the aircraft's first flight, some of the nearly 3,000 produced remain in service with several air arms around the world.

Pioneer family in Nebraska during the winter of 1880

Hot Creek is unusual among the mining ghost towns of Nevada. Founded in the 1860s, the town was both a mining camp for nearby mines and an important stop for freight stage traffic to nearby mining centers like Tybo. The unusual part is that Hot Creek was also a minor resort town deep within one of Nevada's most isolated regions.

The SS Princess May was a steamship built in 1888. The ship is best known for grounding in 1910, which left the ship sticking completely out of the water. This is one of the most famous shipwreck photographs.

Unfortunately, his son didn't fare so well. His book, Fortunate Son, is a very compelling read.

After his graduation from Officer Candidate School, he received orders to South Vietnam in July 1968, where he served as an Infantry Platoon Leader for three months. On October 11, 1968, his rifle jammed during an engagement with North Vietnamese troops; Puller was wounded when he tripped a booby-trapped howitzer round, losing his right leg at the hip, his left leg above the knee, his left hand and most of his fingers on his right hand in the explosion.

Puller died from a self-inflicted gunshot on May 11, 1994.

A small family in front of their home, 1900's.

PFC Andy Masiero and Staff Sergeant Urban Minicozzi of Company A/ 289th Infantry Regiment/ 75th Infantry Division examine the headgear of PFC Masiero in the Ardennes. The young private’s helmet and liner were pierced by an enemy’s bullet which drew blood from his temple, but left him otherwise unscathed.
Reaching the European Theater in November 1944, the 75th began fighting on January 1, 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge, and fought there for 26 bitter, cold days. Crossing the Salm River, the 75th moved into the north flank of the Ardennes in Belgium, cleared Salmchâteau and Bech, and helped take the important bastion of Vielsalm.
From January to May of 1945, the 75th Infantry Division moved back and forth so much along the European battlefront that observing its progress was a a lot like watching a tennis match. During their time in battle, the 75th Infantry Division would have over 4,000 casualties with 817 killed in action

Battle of Anzio: 3rd Infantry Division: James Arness of Minnesota
James Arness, of Minneapolis Minnesota, registered for service with the US Army on June 30, 1942 at the age of 19 years old. He served as a rifleman in the 2nd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division.
On January 22, 1944 Corporal Arness landed on the Anzio Beachead during Operation Shingle. On February 1, James and his squad were caught up in an intense fight in a vineyard. After the enemy was pushed back by the Second Platoon, James was left with multiple severe injuries to his leg, rendering him immobile. The damage to his right leg required numerous surgeries and months of recuperation. This damage would stay with James for the rest of his life. Corporal Arness was honorably discharged from the US Army on January 29, 1945. He was honored with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service. James' younger brother, Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame, also served as a Corporal in the United States Army Air Forces during the war. The brothers are pictured below.
After the war James went on to have a successful career as an actor. Most memorably as the character "Matt Dillon" on the series "Gunsmoke."
James Arness passed away on June 3, 2011 at the age of 88. He lies in rest at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Lest We Forget.

1863 A Union wagon supply train left Fort Scott, Kansas in route to Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. The train stretches out over a mile on the prairie as it rolls down the Texas Road.
Colonel James M. Williams, 2nd Kansas Cavalry, is in charge of the train and its escort. His force consists of detachments of the 2nd Colorado Infantry, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, 6th and 9th Kansas Cavalry, 3rd Indian Home Guard, 1st Kansas Colored Infantry and the 2nd Kansas Artillery.
Since almost the first skirmish of the war in Indian Territory, both sides had become aware of one major deterrent to any offensive strategy, the Blue Stem grass that permeated the prairie. Given adequate moisture, Blue Stem grew in clumps ranging from 3 to 10 feet tall, making visibility problematic even for those on horseback.
Quite often, as wagons traversed the Military Road, only the wagon driver would be visible, making it appear that he was floating along on a sea of grass. Consequently, only certain places along the trail were tactically vulnerable for a military strike.
After a few days, they will ford the halfway point of their journey at Cabin Creek in the Cherokee Nation. But a Confederate force would be waiting, ready to take the wagon train from them.

Planes like the C-47 played a critical role in this year long re-supply mission.

For orbiting the earth 3 times during the Friendship 7 flight in 1962, LtCol John Glenn earned only $8 which included his basic pay, flight pay, basic allowance for subsistence and basic allowance for quarters. The 5 hour flight was not long enough to earn a per diem. Plus he was not reimbursed for mileage because he flew a government vehicle

B-17 Aerial Gunner Fights Off Enemy in Solo Effort and is Honored with Nation's Highest Decoration.
"Staff Sergeant Maynard H. Smith, of Caro, Michigan flew his first mission on May 1, 1943, as a gunner with the 423d Bombardment Squadron. On return, over St. Nazaire, France, his bomber was subjected to intense enemy anti-aircraft fire and fighter plane attacks, being hit several times, with fires in the radio compartment and waist sections. Sergeant Smith succeeded in extinguishing the fires, besides rendering first aid to a wounded crew member, manning the workable guns, and throwing exploding ammunition overboard."

Sergeant Smith's Medal of Honor Citation reads as follows:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty. The aircraft of which Sergeant Smith was a gunner was subjected to intense enemy antiaircraft fire and determined fighter aircraft attacks while returning from a mission over enemy-occupied continental Europe on 1 May 1943. The aircraft was hit several times by antiaircraft fire and cannon shells of the fighter aircraft, 2 of the crew were seriously wounded, the aircraft's oxygen system shot out, and several vital control cables severed when intense fires were ignited simultaneously in the radio compartment and waist sections. The situation became so acute that 3 of the crew bailed out into the comparative safety of the sea. Sgt. Smith, then on his first combat mission, elected to fight the fire by himself, administered first aid to the wounded tail gunner, manned the waist guns, and fought the intense flames alternately. The escaping oxygen fanned the fire to such intense heat that the ammunition in the radio compartment began to explode, the radio, gun mount, and camera were melted, and the compartment completely gutted. Sergeant Smith threw the exploding ammunition overboard, fought the fire until all the firefighting aids were exhausted, manned the workable guns until the enemy fighters were driven away, further administered first aid to his wounded comrade, and then by wrapping himself in protecting cloth, completely extinguished the fire by hand. This soldier's gallantry in action, undaunted bravery, and loyalty to his aircraft and fellow crewmembers, without regard for his own personal safety, is an inspiration to the U.S. Armed Forces.
Smith flew four more combat missions and earned two Air Medals before being taken off flying for medical reasons. He remained in the combat zone in administrative assignments and returned to the United States in March 1945." (US Army Center of Military History)
Maynard Smith relocated to St Petersburg, Florida after the war and passed in 1984 at the age of 72. He lies in rest at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia. Lest we forget.

Bell AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter.
The first six AH-1s arrived at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam on 30 August 1967 for combat testing by the U.S. Army Cobra New Equipment Training Team. On 4 September, the type scored its first combat kill by sinking a sampan boat, killing four Viet Cong. The first AH-1 unit, the 334th Assault Helicopter Company, was declared operational on 6 October 1967. The Army operated the Cobra continuously up to the U.S. withdrawal from South Vietnam in 1973. Typically, the AH-1 provided fire support for ground forces and escorted transport helicopters, in addition to other roles, including aerial rocket artillery (ARA) battalions in the two Airmobile divisions. They also formed "hunter killer" teams by pairing with OH-6A scout helicopters; a team normally comprised a single OH-6 flying slow and low to find enemy forces. If the OH-6 drew fire, the Cobra could strike at the then revealed enemy

I had to look her up. She was repaired, converted to oil burning and sailed for anoth 20 plus years!

The USS Spruance runs aground in AUTEC, the Bahamas. Not as dramatic for the ship as it was the career of the CO.
