^ Great album. The young black guy is Greg Reeves who played bass on Deja Vu. They fired him sometime after. He was friends with Neil Young but C,S, and N apparantly didn't care for the kid. He was only 19 when he played on the album and "Carry on" was written by him. He was a natural who reportedly couldn't read music but played on a major Temptations album for Motown at the age of 15. He's a session musician now and has played for some big names.
C,S,N and Young apparantly did some of the work on Deja Vu at a cabin in Hathaway Pines in the Sierra. This place is about 10 miles from my remote cabin. We bought our property in '78 as a forclosure. Reeves was the guy who got foreclosed on. He tried to smuggle weed out of Mexico and got caught by the authorities and spent time in a nasty Mexican jail. Neil Young finally bailed him out to the tune of 25K. But while he was down there he missed payments on everything including the property we now own. I've never met the guy but I've thanked his flakyness many times. 8 acres on a pristine trout river, North Fork of the Stanislaus. There was nothing available on the river then and nothing now.
My place sits above this 1926 logging bridge

Sounds really horrible. I'm sorry that you have to live with it. I hurt for you, and in my magnanimosity, I'd be happy to relieve you of your pain. You can give me the cabin, and I'll shoulder the burden for you!

Gold miners at their Colorado cabin, 1890.

Yellowbird. Some assembly required.

Come on up, I'll flip you the keys! This guy caught this big Brown right under my cabin a month ago. I took his picture and he released the nasty thing. It's kinda big so maybe you could get rid of it for me.
and my new fridge is making the beer a little too cold. Maybe you could help rid me of some. You da man Steve!

Great insight and area!

One of my Aunts retired to Hathaway Pines. My cousin designed their house.

I've run the Stanislaus probably 50 times...before the New Melones Dam was opened.

Incredible part of the world.

A lot of people think they ruined the best 9 miles of rafting in the State with the New Melones dam. There's a few rafting outfits licensed to run the stretch from SourGrass to Big Trees Park and I'm right between. You may have floated past my place, I built it in'84.

It was my favorite and not just for the rafting, but there were some really neat caves in the area, some great hikes plus the last 3/4 of a mile was the nude beaches and rocks.

We also had a really neat spot on the river for our overnight trips. I really enjoyed the side trips on the overnights since you could spend a lot of time off the rafts.

I last ran the Stani in 1982. Very fond memories. Do you rent the cabin? I would be interested.

My eldest grandson swimming in Beaver Creek, a nearby tributary to the river.
I remember people chaining themselves to rocks in protest of flooding that rafting stretch for the dam. Building it was a tragedy. I've never rented it out but have let friends use it. We can talk, I have a few hunter friends who just love it as base camp (glamp). I'm in D5 and D6 is across the river. Lots of Indian grinding rocks around the area. I've not seen petroglyph like that though, very cool.

The upper test ranges at China Lake are full of petroglyphs:

We went hiking and photographing there years ago. Someone had done a petroglyph of a Model T back in the day.....

Her campain slogan can be used by most of the politicians of today.

Attending secretarial school in 1922, Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen was invited by her roommate to Union Hill, New Jersey, to see if she was interested in working with either member of an act that was splitting up. The act was George Burns and Billy Lorraine, and she chose George. She and Burns made their first performance at the Hill Street Theatre in Newark, New Jersey, where they were paid $5 per day. George saw that the audience not only found Gracie's character funny but they fell in love with her, and he did, too. He immediately changed the act to give her all the funny lines and played her straight man. They became a hit.
When she went to work with Burns, she was engaged to another man. It took four years for George to change her mind, but they went on to become one of the best remembered couples in Hollywood history.
Legend has it that, in the early 1940s, during the height of their popularity, Burns had a brief extramarital affair. He felt so guilty, he bought her an extravagant silver centerpiece for the dining room table, but since neither brought up the affair even once, he assumed she knew nothing about it. Years later, when Gracie had a friend over for coffee, George overheard her say, "You know, I wish George would cheat on me again. I'd really like a new centerpiece for the table."
In 1940, Allen announced she was running for President of the United States on the Surprise Party ticket. Burns and Allen did a cross-country whistle-stop campaign tour on a private train, performing their live radio show in different cities. In one of her campaign speeches, Gracie said, "I don't know much about the Lend-Lease Bill, but if we owe it we should pay it." Another typical Gracie-ism on the campaign trail went like this: "Everybody knows a woman is better than a man when it comes to introducing bills into the house." The Surprise Party mascot was the kangaroo; the motto was "It's in the bag." As part of the gag, Allen (in reality, the Burns and Allen writers) published a book, "Gracie Allen for President," which included photographs from their nationwide campaign tour and the Surprise Party convention. Allen received an endorsement from Harvard University.
From an Allen campaign speech: "As I look around me and see all all these trusting and believing faces shining up at me with love and respect, tears come into my eyes. And do you know why? My girdle is killing me." (IMDb/Wikipedia)

I am glad there are dedicated photographers willing to go out in super crappy weather, and take pictures like this one for us to enjoy. Really cool photo. Yuck yuck.

This photographer is a real pussy!

In 1909, nearly 80 percent of Jerome, Arizona's residents were men, most of whom worked for the United Verde Copper Mine. Residents of the mining town had to carve narrow streets out of the steep hillsides of Cleopatra Hill on the side of Mingus Mountain.
