Formal portraits rarely featured smiles, but they can be found in photographs of daily life during this period. South Carolina, 1912.

Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari)
Dracaena cinnabari, the Socotra dragon tree or dragon blood tree, is a dragon tree native to the Socotra archipelago, part of Yemen, located in the Arabian Sea. It is named after the blood-like color of the red sap that the trees produce.

In A.D. 15, a baby girl was born in a legionary encampment on the banks of the Rhine River. Her father, the famous Roman general Germanicus, was engaged in warfare with the barbarians at that time, intent on recovering the lost eagles of Varus. The girl is known to history as Agrippina the Younger. She was the granddaughter of Augustus’ faithful lieutenant Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. She was also granddaughter by adoption to the Emperor Tiberius. Another grandfather was Drusus the Elder who died fighting barbarians in Germania Superior in 9 B.C. On her mother’s side, she was directly descended from Augustus himself. Her brother, Caligula, became an emperor and she was the mother of Nero. She later married her uncle, the Emperor Claudius. In her honor, her birthplace was renamed Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Today the place is called Cologne, Germany (Köln). Some of the Roman walls of Colonia Claudia still stand.

I saw what may have been a Aston Martin DB11 the other day, stuck in traffic as I drove by. It was matte black, with yellow/orange (burnt mustard) rear diffuser, and maybe a red colored accent stripe at the rocker panel.

Then again, it could have been a 2019 Aston Martin Vantage with a wrap..........it was head turning in any case.

The “Oldest Gold Of Mankind” was found in the Varna Necropolis, on The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.
The Varna Necropolis (also known as Varna Cemetery) is a large burial site in the western industrial zone of Varna. It is internationally considered to be one of the key archaeological sites in world prehistory.
It was at this site that the oldest worked gold treasure in the world was discovered, dating from 4,600 BC to 4,200 BC.
A total of 294 graves dating between 4569-4340 BC have been discovered at Varna Necropolis so far, including three thousand gold artefacts.
While there were many elite burials uncovered, there was one in particular that stood out among the rest – grave 43. Here, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a high status male who appears to have been a ruler/leader of some kind.
More gold was found within this burial than in the entire rest of the world in that period.

in 1954, the NACA delivered this Northrop P-61C Black Widow to the Smithsonian. The Black Widow was the first U.S. aircraft designed to locate and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in bad weather, thanks to on-board radar.

I think that is a thing of beauty.

The brakes never seem to wear out!

It was revolutionary for its time—distribute “public land” to private citizens; 160 acres at a time, with the provision they “proved up” the land: Build a house, till the soil, plant trees, fence a corral. Five years later, for a small fee, it was theirs—earned by hard work.
The first day the Homestead Act went into effect, January 1, 1863, a farmer named Daniel Freeman (pictured) filed his claim on land near Beatrice, Nebraska. Seventy-three years later, in 1936, this claim became the site of the Homestead National Monument of America.
The park protects Daniel and Agnes Freeman’s graves and homestead, the first homestead in the United States.
