Gulf of Tonkin. Scores of empty 5” 38 caliber powder casings cover the deck around a 5” gun mount on USS New Jersey (BB 62) after the ship fired over 1600 rounds the night before. Photographed by SN Robert G. Smith, February 23, 1969

n November 1923, officers raided the Nels A. Hanson farm near Hankinson looking for a still. It was known to them that Mr. Hanson was considered one of the leading bootleggers of his community and that his product was considered to be above reproach, but they could never locate the still.
Eventually, Mr. Hanson was convinced to take them to it, so he led the way to his pig stye and began scraping away the litter. Using a hammer, he opened a trap door where a small ladder extended to the basement under the stye.
The basement was lined in tar-paper protecting six barrels of mash and a 15-gallon still. The barrels were covered in old blankets to keep out the seepage from above. It was believed that he used the still at night to prevent detection of the smoke, and the pig stye masked the smell of the mash. The close proximity of the pigs also opted for a quick turnaround time for disposing of the cooked mash.
Nels received 90 days in jail and a $200.00 fine but received high praise from the Federal prohibition agents for masking both the sight and the smell of his still in such an innovative way, in a sense a real North Dakota entrepreneur.

Lots of memories from that era, not Van Nuys Blvd but other parts of SoCal. - a friend of mine had that same truck and it was great in the day.

Too much party time on that engine!

The longest road in the world to walk, is from Cape Town (South Africa) to Magadan (Russia). No need for planes or boats, there are bridges. It's a 22,387 kilometers (13911 miles) and it takes 4,492 hours to travel. It would be 187 days walking nonstop, or 561 days walking 8 hours a day. Along the route, you pass through 17 countries, six time zones and all seasons of the year.

This is how the head of a spear went through a bone during the Roman Gaelic War. It still remains in the bone after 2070 years.

These two workmen on the Clonbrock Estate, Ahascragh, Co Galway in 1870 are probably "outdoor servants". The chap holding the billhook is wearing gaiters to protect his legs from brambles or thorny underbrush. He is wearing the kind of round hat which was universal workman wear till superseded by the flat cap, at the end of the century. His tail coat, with large brass buttons, was a distinctive feature of the dress of the "stage Irishman" till well into the 20th century.
His companion, by contrast, is wearing the kind of working suit which would have been seen anywhere on the mainland, teamed with a navvy-style cap. They are standing in front of the "Photographic House" at Clonbrock: the Clonbrock photographic collection is one of the most important archives for images of Ireland in the later Victorian period.

The shark in Finding Nemo (2003) was named Bruce, supposedly as an homage to the mechanical shark in JAWS - who was named Bruce after Steven Spielberg’s lawyer.

TWO STRIKE (1831-1915)
Two Strike, or Numpkahapa, was a Brulé Lakota chief born in the White River Valley in 1831 in the northeastern part of present-day Nebraska. He acquired the Lakota name of "Nomkahpa", meaning "Knocks out two" in a battle with the Utes, in which he knocked two Utes off their horses with a single blow from his war club. Two Strike fought in various battles against the United States Army during the Bozeman Trail Wars, allied with Chief Crow Dog and Chief Crazy Horse in the Powder River Country of Wyoming.
Two Strike and his band were present alongside bands of Southern Cheyennes at the Battle of Summit Springs, Colorado on July 11, 1869, when the 5th Cavalry and 50 Pawnee scouts led a surprise attack on their camp. Buffalo Bill Cody was present at the battle as a scout leader. Chief Tall Bull of the Southern Cheyennes along with 51 members of the Lakota-Cheyenne Combined Encampment were killed and 17 women and children were taken prisoner, the rest of the Lakota and Cheyenne managed to escape. The soldiers then burned all the tipis and their contents.
Chief Two Strike was one of the main leaders of the combined Oglala and Burnt forces who, along with more than 1,000 brave men, attacked a group of 350 Pawnees who had established their reserve in Nebraska to hunt buffalo. Over 70 Pawnees were killed in the battle that took place along a canyon now located in Hitchcock County, Nebraska. The canyon has since been renamed Massacre Canyon.
Two Strike died in 1915 on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.

These are the same little spring clips used on my 86 El Camino to hold on the window winder. No power windows. I have to push the door card back a bit to see and slip a special tool behind the window crank to push the clip off. It usually goes flying. And trying to put it back on is just as tricky. If it goes flying don't bother buying the Doorman clip as they are a different shape, and they don't fit. So keep searching for the original clip. It will be in the most hidden spot on the floor or in some hard to get to spot.

My buddy in Utah found this and took these shots out on one of his adventure bike rides. My guess is a range feeder that was not collected in the fall and froze or starved to death. seems it was trying to seek shelter in the tree.

this guy is a mad man on his bikes. once did a 24 hour nonstop solo ride from here in the foothills to points north touching both nevada and oregon. hit a small deer up here before he left for Utah on his BMW GS adventure that totaled the bike and nearly him.

Very cool. I wonder if one side is facing north and the other south. I could see the cold, dry winter weather mummifying it the way it is.

With the clouds the shadows don't say for sure. I'd guess the closest would be just behind the back wheel of the bike looks like a maybe a shadow? the brightest clouds to the left seem to make that the south?

it seems to be pointing north. had not considered that until you mentioned it, what's the significance if so?

Usually North is the cold side and where the cold, drying wind comes from.
