That island: Most of it deforested when there could be fruit and agriculture. The entire thing criss-crossed with a tight grid of curvy roads everywhere. I guess they must like auto-x or something? Totally pointless. All the buildings in the center, when there could be some nice cottages with beach views along the coast. The marina doesn't have a nearby dry dock building to store over winter. Just why.

You do realize that it has been in private hands since it was given as a royal grant by the British crown..

It is not deforested, it has some the last remaining old growth forest on it in the northeast.. Forests on eastern Long Island are typically stunted growth compared to forests in the Catskills or Adirondacks.

It is home to more than 1,000 acres of old growth forest, the largest stand of white oak trees in the Northeast, 1,000 acres of meadows, rare birds, Indian artifacts, and structures that date back to the 17th century.

It has a large manor house, and a number of out building, a grain mill, etc.. There are deer, pheasant , turkey, rabbits , etc..Fishing in the waters around the island is world class, lobster, clams, striped bass ,fluke, flounder, black sea bass crab .. seals sun themselves on the beaches..

Its really a remarkable place..

The firm I worked for was hired to perform an updated survey of the island.. I spent a few weeks commuting from Montauk, to Gardiners Island.. It was a pleasure working there for a few weeks...

It is now having a slice cut from it, by the gent on top of the ladder. The rick was built along Channel Islands lines. The rick behind is in the process of contruction, under a temporary sheet. ‘Kew cuts its own hay for the five Suffolk Punch horses’.
