Jupiter’s south pole, taken by Cassini NASA.

In June of 1971, with an estimated budget of $7.6 million and another $2 million spent on promotion, Le Mans was released. Behind the scenes, the film had cost McQueen even more: his marriage, his production company, and many friendships. The film failed to earn back its cost, having gone close to $1.6 million over-budget, and McQueen didn’t attend the premiere.
Despite this, Le Mans became a cult film over time. McQueen had wanted to make more of a documentary than a traditional Hollywood blockbuster; with its meticulous attention on the race and the cars, rather than the drivers and drama, Le Mans is one of the most exciting and realistic racing movies ever made – the ultimate racing movie.

Not many people know that the Spiratone auxiliary fish-eye lens (also sold branded as Kenko and Samigon) was used by Stanley Kubrick as the "eye" of HAL9000.

Here's an engine rarely seen since they were only ever designed and intended to be disposable. This is the 4 cylinder radial engine from a WWII German G7A torpedo. It ran on Decaline fuel (decahydronaphthalene), which was first burned. The combustion byproducts were then passed through a device called a 'wet heater', which also introduced water (from a 57L onboard storage tank) to produce superheated steam. This high pressure mixture of superheated steam and compressed air was finally sent through the engine to drive the pistons.
Since the internal combustion/steam generator system was self-contained and fueled by a chemical reaction instead of ambient air, it could run underwater. The 4 cylinder, 'X' type radial engine produced up to 350 horsepower at its maximum power setting, which was enough to push the 26',6" torpedo (the length of a large Uhaul moving van for comparison purposes) along at nearly 50mph while submerged.

A welder works on cowls for Liberty Ships in California, 1942. At the peak of the Liberty ship production, shipyards could deliver a completed vessel in less than a week. The record was set by the SS Robert E. Peary, built by the Kaiser Permanente Metals Corporation’s yard in Richmond, California, launched just 4 days, 15 hours, and 30 minutes after the keel was laid

"We went to the Petersen Automotive Museum today to see the Porsche exhibit, and the museum in general. It's such a beautiful venue if you love cars and motorcycles.

While there, I came across Steve McQueen's gorgeous Turbo. I knew that car very well, since my dear friend Dean Paul Martin bought it after McQueen owned it. It's a legendary car among Porsche enthusiasts. I rode in that car more times than I can count, and even drove it a few times myself. It made me happy and, yes, a little sad to see it today. Lots of fond memories with Dean. He was the most wonderful guy".

During the cleanup following the collapse of the World Trade Center, crews uncovered a shipwreck positioned 7 feet below the foundation. The ship came from Philadelphia circa 1773.

In 1899, John Harris discovered the oxy-acetylene method of cutting while researching the manufacture of synthetic rubies. While working on the materials, he accidentally cut the metal plate beneath the synthetic ruby, discovering the world's first flame-cutting torch.
He exhibited the torch at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and started Harris Calorific in 1905. Harris continued to refine its gas torches and started manufacturing related accessories, including gas pressure regulators.

"1959 Pontiac V8 getting a paint job at Plant 9, Pontiac Motor Division."

USS Growler (SSG-577)

3500 year old Minoan Road, the oldest road in Europe.
This incredibly ancient road stretches for 50 km (31 miles) from Knossos in Crete, Greece, through the mountains to Gortyn and Lebena.
The road had side drains, a 200 mm (8-inch) thick pavement of sandstone blocks bound with clay-gypsum mortar, covered by a layer of basaltic flagstones and had separate shoulders.

Sitting on the doorstep of her typical East End home, Mrs Robinson stuffed mattresses with straw for a living. For each completed mattress she could expect to receive one shilling. circa 1900. This image is part of the book Charles Booth's London Poverty Maps, a magnificently-illustrated tome which publishes the philanthropist's famous hand-colored maps alongside anecdotes from the researchers, and contemporary photos, in one volume. B-36 aircraft commander / pilot pedestal. Note the warning not to operate landing gear and flaps simultaneously unless alternators were synchronized. The huge airplane had a 3-phase AC electrical system.
