![]() My Danish girlfriend spoke pretty good British English, but she had problems with a few words. She called wood stoves, "wooden stoves." She got really pissed when anyone corrected her English, so I never commented on it. To this day, 30 years later, I suppose she is still talking about starting fires in her "wooden stove."

![]() ![]() New Mexico came to visit us last night. 60 MPH gusts and lots of dust. ![]() ![]() Fired but unexploded Battleship rounds recovered on Iwo Jima are piled in a munitions scrap area - March 1945 Most of these are 14” HC / HE shells, Note that the nose fuses have been removed, also looks like a few aerial bombs mixed in. These duds probably resulted from the soft volcanic ash soil on Iwo Jima. LIFE Magazine Archives - W. Eugene Smith Photographer WWP-PD ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() A great image showing the scale of the Grand Slam bomb. Here, newly made Grand Slam bombs wait to be delivered at the Elswick Works factory in Newcastle, England, 7 January 1945. - Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() An armorer carefully services one of the .50 caliber Browning machine guns inside the ball turret of a B-17 Flying Fortress, ensuring it remains in peak condition for combat. Positioned on the bomber’s underside, the ball turret was a crucial defensive station, allowing gunners to fend off enemy aircraft approaching from below. Regular maintenance was essential to prevent malfunctions, especially at high altitudes where freezing temperatures could jam the guns. The B-17’s ball turret gunner had one of the most dangerous roles in the crew. Cramped inside the small sphere with limited movement, the gunner operated two .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns, using a reflector sight. ![]() ![]() ![]()
