when i was in construction i always tried to get my boss to hire a chick when we needed extra help. They were nowhere to be found of course.
Some local architecture that has been demolished to make way for an aldi and red robin.

Forgotten Appalachian Memories
"Warshing Clothes Recipe" - imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !
A grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:
This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook, spelling errors and all.
WARSHING CLOTHES
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.
Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.
Hang old rags on fence.
Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

French ironclad Redoutable in dry dock, the first warship in the world to be built in steel, c. 1875.
Compared to iron, steel allowed for greater structural strength for a lower weight. France was the first country to manufacture steel in large quantities

Italians viewing antique Emperor Caligula's Nemi ships, which were elaborate floating palaces containing quantities of marble, mosaic floors, heating, and plumbing. They were rediscovered in the 1930's but destroyed by a fire during WW2.

I had never read about the "Nemi" ships. I have now!

Exactly, I'd never heard of them but will be looking them up after work. It's a shame that they were lost in WWII.

In the words of Chief Quartermaster (QMC) Phillips:

My orders say I'm not supposed to know where I'm taking this boat, so I don't. But one look at you, and I know it's gonna be hot.

The blast of air will still buffet him around, but he won't be smacked by 20# of tread or 50# of wheel.

The funny bit is that normally, the tire goes inside the cage and the tech is in the wild. I suspect it's not quite as safe the way it's pictured.
People get killed by exploding tires.
Here's a compilation.

My dad was a pilot in the USAF, and he flew C-124s and they have a HUGE set of tires to handle the weight. "His" aircraft was pretty much totaled, the hangar was leveled and several airmen were killed when a tire blew up during a tire change. Fortunately for me, dad was a pilot, and not part of maintenance so he was not involved. He siad that accident totally changed the way tire changes were handled. It was the basis for the maintenance manual for tire changes from then on.

Ricardo Montalbán realizing he's the victim of a Fantasy Island practical joke. Taken just before he filmed a scene on Ceti Alpha V for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Ha! There was a time Paul, indeed there was a time.
