This is my "rifle" for home defense:

Ruger 10/22 with 30 rounds of LR HPs.

How beneficial is a HP in 22? I can't imagine that you get much expansion.

Folding stock like that is illegal as hell in California, shame I lost mine in a fire.

That's a really cool little, not so long, long spoon/ladle.

I would think that a 22 is very unlikely to go a person, so to ensure penetration, you'd skip the HP.

you all really need to try a CCI Velocitor.

Hadn't checked in a while. All of my 10/22 25 and 30 round magazines are currently loaded with CCI Mini-Mags. No HPs

Per Vash, will have to check out the CCI Velocitors

One of my home defense, as others have pointed out, 223/556, will go right through you (and walls too) but I have 6 or 7 ARs. This will hit like a sledgehammer.

A nice discrete case there Byron.

That's enough to have Matt Smith crying his eyes out.

Here is another interesting candidate for short range down-the-hallway home defense. Loaded with 000 Buck, every trigger pull delivers 4x 36 Cal lead shot in a 2" pattern. Fast action and a 6 round mag with side loading gate should end a home invasion pretty quickly while still looking like a brush gun instead of an Uzi. Far less intimidating to shoot than a 12GA yet far more stopping power than any .22

I don't particularly like shooting a 12 gauge (prefer a 20 ga) but I keep a Remington 870 handy with several OO buck rounds in a stock mounted bandolier. I don't keep it loaded but can have it up and running in seconds! I also keep a 9mm close to the bed for immediate use if needed. My wife likes the 38 revolver with 2 rds of snake shot and then 3 more of the nasty hollow point bad boys. Bottom line is that whatever you have is better than nothing! Another choice for someone sensitive to recoil/noise would be a Ruger PCC in 9mm. They can be set up to use Glock mags with 17 to 33 rds available. Not too heavy, not too long but quite accurate. "You must choose wisely, grasshopper"!

Fiocchi 00 Defensive Buck.... 9 x .30 cal pellets spread in the shape of a football ... even out of a 20" bbl, the pattern doesn't spread out much. Instant threat stoppage, tame to shoot also. Like getting hit with 4 .45 ACPs at the same time... so "they" say.

Just who is "they"?

They tough .

these kinds of discussions keep coming up, "what is best for defense in this or that situation"
Either for self or more often for somebody else.

There's no real answer is there. It's a hypothetical discussion for a situation that most likely will never happen and when it DOES, it will invariably happen in exactly the other way it was discussed.

The fact that the person who needs it worries about it.. Well, You can't worry the way the person worries, everybody has different variables and priorities, different life and house and expected circumstances.

So the only real answer would be : Go to a range.. shoot whatever guns you can
Get the guns you like, invariably you'll like more guns and other guns and start a collection of guns which more often then not, will spend most of their time in the gunsafe..

And one of those guns will be yer happy gun.. the one you like to shoot the most..
the one that feels right for you..

At which point, sell all the rest, cause you don't need em.. and buy more ammo for the gun you do use
It don't matter that the barrel wears out.. just rebarrel it when the rifling is gone

I agree.

I am fortunate enough to have my own range, the kids are out of the house and my closest neighbor is over 1/4 mile away.

I have enough range time to know what I like for my "truck guns" and home defense, which are different. I do not carry. Probably not for everybody but I am super comfortable with my choices. I have stored or sold guns I thought I would like but did not.

I have written this before, but a few of my ex-Seal buddies all say the same thing: Shot placement...if you don't hit it it doesn't matter what the caliber is. Learn how to shoot and shoot well.
