That small snapper must only be a few weeks old.
What state is this? Almost looks like MI

She did lay her eggs there, about 12 or 15; this was in June. I placed a short wire fence around the nest to protect from predators which worked well, or so I thought. About mid September I took the fence down as I thought the eggs did not mature, but either the baby turtles hatched or something dug up the small eggs as I found empty egg shells in October. I have pictures somewhere.

I'm hoping to create an area, something closer to the lake that's more protected but will get some sun or the appropriate conditions.

I forget what the incubation days are for turtles.
You'll prob have better luck than I did because yours are at home.

Mine were all bought online (or pet stores) and came from the southern gulf states.
Good luck.

There's one turtle that would agree with you, red-beard! Back in 2009, this small female snapper thought the hard, packed gravel next to the road was a good place to lay eggs. Pretty crazy. This is part of the reason why I'm looking for info on creating an area for turtle nests.

I saw "Black Noir" climb up on the floating thing. He jus barely got on and then stopped. I guess he was tired from the exertion.

stevej37 04-07-2021 06:47 AM

^^^ It's real difficult for them to get up on that floating plant...no toe-hold to push up.

I just returned from Walmart. Bought four orange fish to add to the other two. They are only about an inch long. 25 cents each! I don't think I've ever bought 4 items at Walmart for a buck!
I hope they don't get eaten by the larger fish.

Gumballs?

Yep, used to be a penny. And the big ones for a nickel are $0.25

Raccoons will get them most of the time before they hatch.
Here's some good info....https://www.mass.gov/files/2017-08/creating-turtle-nesting-sites.pdf

That's their favorite trick.
Soon that one will get hungry and after grabbing a mouthful, will have to get in the water to swallow it. Then the others move in. :)
