I lived full time in Colorado Springs between 2000 to 2008. In 2009 I lived in Broomfield, actually very close to these tragic wildfires and then part time again in Colorado Springs from 2010 to 2016.

I really miss the State and if there was a way I could move back, I would do so in a heartbeat. I have great memories and miss those fantastic mountains, natural beauty and near perfect weather. It's ironic, when I lived there, I took it for granted (I guess happens to all of us?).

In my engineering industry the professional opportunities were limited in CO, so I moved to Houston. Houston has been an interesting mix of scary weather with the flooding and extreme heat in the summer but overall a positive move and I always look for the positive no matter where I live (except the rust belt...I hated living in the North East). Every place has its goods and bads but CO definitely tops the list.

I mean, if I watch the news how often is there a good story vs bad?

They love to report on the rare, it sells.
The commonplace, unreported.
Watching the news skews perception to a world filled with uncommon events and the good life all around becomes absent.

I lived in Castle Rock, south of Denver, for a year back about 20 years ago. We all loved it there. I have friends in the Superior area from those days. I know they are ok, not sure about their home. My thoughts are with all of those impacted by this.

Tragedy gets ratings

Colorado is okay, they just let too many Californians in, just like Oregon

And Montana. And Nevada. And Idaho. And Texas soon enough.

About 25 years ago my Dad (a hardcore liberal) moved from SoCal to Montana. He recalled with astonishment how the guy at the counter at Dept of Motor Vehicles was giving him dirty looks when he saw that he was from California to register his car.

I asked him "Do you understand why he has contempt for Californians, that he sees his way of life changing through no actions of his own?" My Dad knew of course but he still voted exactly the same way he did while in California.

“One of the big things with the recovery up there was trying to help people get into long-term housing,” Schliep said. “Down here, especially with the market the way it is and the limited inventory we have it’s going to be really, really tough for people to find more permanent housing.”

A week ago, on Dec. 27, there were just 1,950 single-family homes and 913 condos listed for sale in the entire Denver metro area, Parle said. That was everything available from Longmont in the north to Castle Rock in the south and Evergreen in the west to Parker in the east.

As of Monday, those numbers had dwindled to 1,576 homes and 571 condos available on the region’s multiple listing service. The rental and for-sale housing markets could get even more strained, Parle said.

Fire source has been determined to be the 12 tribes ranch. They are a large religious group with a local faction there.
So much for any civil recourse.

The fires are so sad. If they had come literally less than 24h later when a snowstorm hit this would not have happened.

Same to tornado reporting. The crew will find the perfect angle for the reporter to stand in front of one mobile home that was not even anchored down and is torn up.

I was a news photographer at one fire years ago. The TV crew ran up to some guy watching his home burn down knowing his pets were likely trapped inside. They stuck the microphone in his face and asked "how does that make you feel?" the guy said several words I can't type on this site, and punched the reporter hard in his face and asked him how does that make you feel you expletive. The cops just laughed.

Any of these major fires is a horrible event. I feel for all those who lost homes and any other losses in these events. Best of luck to any/all impacted.
