I love Colorado. It’s beautiful, period. We try to go every year.
My aunt and uncle have a really nice cabin in southwestern Colorado. Unfortunately it’s their second cabin n the same site since the first one burned down in a wild fire. They were dejected and ready to build somewhere else but… it’s beautiful.

Raymond Chandler's 1938 short story 'Red Wind' is set in L.A. during a bout with the winds, Their unusual effect on people is layered into the plot.

Meh….. It’s the west. There are fires in the west, same as centuries past. I’ve been through two and was not in any danger. You keep your insurance up to date and a bug out bag at the ready. Small price to pay IMO.
In some cases here (not the Marshall fire) the Forest Service is hamstrung by higher powers, keeping them out of the Forest. The ladders fuels get higher, no prescribed burns or logging allowed, and large crown fires are the result. Crown fires cannot be fought. I wouldn’t mind less people in the urban areas but the traffic isn’t comparable to LA or Dallas at all. The two lanes are okay on a summer week day but are lightly traveled during the week in spring/fall. Dawn drives during summer weekends have clear roads too.

Man IDK how I'd recover from such a disaster. One wall of my home has 100's of books, my telescopes are covered by a rider but the firearms would be a total loss.
If I get a few hours warning I could save the majority of it, but man what a nightmare. As for the original question there are many cities that are far more hellish. The Rockies have to be experienced in person as does the Grand Mesa. Overall, the state is beautiful. It has its' challenges of course.

Colorado is more like heaven on earth. I could list plenty of places that are hell on earth but someone reading might be paying a mortgage in one of them, so I won't.

IMHO - If you avoid the cities in any state you will sidestep 99% of that states problems.
i.e. my state of FloRida - Miami (most of south Florida actually) - Tampa - Orlando (downtown not Disney) - Jacksonville and Tallahassee are all sketchy and you have to be on your toes. Tallahassee - the only place in Florida I have walked out of my hotel in the evening and felt like we were in imminent danger and needed to get off the street we were walking on. A sad commentary about our states capitol. Since the start of this pandemic, I find myself avoiding cities more and enjoying little towns all over the state. You can typically cover a little downtown area in one weekend. We have been to about 4 little towns so far in the last 18 months and have many more road trips to little towns on our radar.

Town size does make a difference here in CO. 80% of population lives on the front range. For those that don’t know, CO is split north to south in the middle. Mountains to the west, plains to the right. The front range comprises all the towns on N/S line.
The nice thing about rural counties is conservative people who live there have officials that don’t enforce Governor BS mandates/decrees. Bad policy in the ghettos (large cities) doesn’t fly in the rural areas. Edited - inappropriate / language. -Z-man.

So, by some of the comments here, you'd think these now homeless 991 families deserved what they got.
Here’s a breakdown of where the destruction happened: 553 were destroyed in Louisville, 45 were damaged 332 were destroyed in Superior, 60 were damaged 106 homes were destroyed in unincorporated Boulder County, 22 were damaged BTW, great map of the destruction for anybody that cares. https://coloradosun.com/2022/01/01/map-marshall-fire-homes-destroyed/ |

Yes, it is hell on earth.
Please stay away and do not come here, or Wyoming. My thoughts are with the families located just a little south of me. |

The thing that really twists the knife is that it happened in the day and there were thousands of pets inside those homes waiting for their owners. What a terrible mind feck for every pet owner.
