I think that's called "degloving." I've seen photos in safety meetings at a previous workplace. Yikes. I could have had the same thing happen to myself as a teen with my class ring. I jumped up to pull down a gate at the entrance to a store in a mall. My ring caught for a split second and twisted on my finger. I had a small cut, but that was it. I got lucky.

You're lucky the skiing event wasn't worse, like the guy in Greg's story above!
Thanks for the answer. That makes sense.

They removed the finger at the knuckle closest to the hand. That was 40+ years ago. It never grew back...
And you'd just told him. How long was your brother with that girlfriend?

somewhat related:
the jeweller swapped out the diamond in my wife's ring. it went in for a cleaning.
1 week later - i noticed the stone seemed loose, i inspected the diamond with the 20x. yikes! went back - "out of business" sign on door.
she lost the downgraded ring at work. insurance replaced it - with the proper grade diamond, fortunately.

Why we only take my wife's jewelry to our regular jeweler.

Actually tore my first wedding ring, rock climbing. That could have gone worse.

Done a lot of electrical work over the years, so no jewelry for the most part. Now, I wear it when I feel like it. Wife doesn't mind. She also wears hers infrequently, mostly due to work. Doesn't bother me.

Daughter thinks we're both crazy.

Since we are talking about wedding ring horror stories here, one of my bosses at a landscaping company had a good reason to never wear a ring again.
Working in the shop with him and he was welding something on a piece of equipment. No gloves. The rod brushed his wedding ring that was conveniently on the base metal. Initially he thought there was some slag or something on his hand and tried to brush it off but all at once the helmet went flying and he was running for the wash sink. The ring was glowing red when he started running.
His finger was a damn mess after and I never wore a ring at work while on the tools after that.

I went through 3 Amazon stainless steel "Damascus" bands, $6 each. Either lost them, or wore them down to the point of looking like crap, or scratching them all to hell.

Now that I work with machines, a basic Amazon silicone ring, in case some spinning part grabs it.

I take it off every night, and usually don't bother on the weekends, unless I'm trolling for cougars at the bar

Yes... it looks somewhat like this one, but it's silver instead of tungsten. It has a flatter (less convex) face, rounded edges so it's very comfortable and less likely to cut into my finger, and being silver, it shows every minor nick and scrape it's ever endured. I like it that way and wouldn't want to polish it so it looks like this one.

I designed it... carved it out of the wax/plastic-like substance it was cast from.

I take it off at night and when washing my hands because being so wide, it traps a lot of water underneath. I leave it where it sits until I see it later after my skin has dried, but sometimes that's hours or days later.

I've been avoiding this thread...

When I first got married I wore my wedding band. About 6 years in I stopped and that hurt my then wife.
At 17 years we separated and I was angry about everything!

Just before leaving the house we built together for the last time I hammered my wedding ring into one of the rafters!

Why did you stop wearing it?

I was in the Army at the time and it removed it when I went into the field... And over time I got used to not wearing it.

No excuse really. I was young.

I don't wear it. I hate the feel of rings, watches or anything jewelry.

I wish my wife didn't wear hers. She has wrecked our windows as she pushes up on the wood to open them and the rings cuts into the wood. She scratched our shower glass when she wiped it off and the towel slipped out of her hand, and the ring scratched the grass. She has a mark on her steering wheel. I could go on and on with all the scratches that ring has caused.

It reminds me of an old Corolla I had. The previous owner lady must have had a diamond ring and would wipe the window. It had lots of left and right scratches on the glass LOL

I wear my all the time. I machined our bands from the intake and exhaust valves of an Ilmor V10 engine that ran in the 1993 Brazilian Gran Prix.

I wear mine regularly. I'll take it off when making pizza dough, on the rowing machine and a few other things. It's important to my wife. Being married in our 50's was important to her. Me, not so much, but I'll do what makes her happy, unless I really have an issue with it.

Yes, unless I am in the OR or working on a car or something where there is a risk of snatching a finger off.

I wear one when I'm out of the house. I don't wear it in the house or when typing. Or when working on open electrical circuits.
